Fixing your car windshield
1. Fixing Your Car Windshield
Windshield is the most useful and most vulnerable part of your car. The 24 hour contact with
bad weather, chances of accidents such as getting hit by a football and full time exposure to
all type of environmental elements, just how much can a mere windshield bear? This is why
windshields are a common reason cars are taken to repair shops.
Windshield replacement involves no rocket science. You can do it yourself easily and save the
cost of taking a repairman’s services. Here is how to do it.
If you decide to get a new windshield and fix it by yourself, be very careful when transporting
the shield from the shop to your home, as there is a high tendency of cracks occurring on rough
handling. If the windshield doesn’t fit, trim the edges about 1 mm at all sides with a saw motion.
Remove the plastic clips holding the damaged windshield in place. Some clips can be quite
tough to handle, although some are usually simple enough. Now, cut out the urethane between
the windshield and the pinchwed. This can take about 30 minutes. Use a cold knife for this
purpose if you do not have proper tools. This must be done carefully.
Clean the pinchwed with a brush and water. Any rusted areas must be treated and bare metal
trimmed. By doing this, you are making the pinchwed ready for the new windshield. Apply
the frit band activator to prepare the urethane to accept the new windshield glass. Apply the
urethane with an electric caulking gun so that the new urethane adheres to the old one. Now
your windshield is ready to be fit in.
Be very careful as you fit the glass in. Dirt from your hands can contaminate and reduce the
efficiency of the frit band activator. Align the windshield properly from the left, right, top and
bottom sides. You are done fixing your car windshield.
An important thing to decide is when you should replace the windshield as sometimes a simple
repair can work. It is recommended that the windshield be replaced if the damage or crack
is in the line of vision of the driver or is greater than 4 cm crack. Prefer to use OEM (Original
Equipment Manufacturer) glass for your windshield, as it comes with assured safety and quality
standards. A simple windshield replacement can take up to one hour. With more complex
models, the process may take more than 3 hours.
