Kiewit Recommendation 09
1. September 12, 2010
Re: Professional Recommendation for Ricardo Rodriguez
To Whom It May Concern:
Ricardo Rodriguez joined Kiewit Construction Co. full-time as an Assistant Business Manager in October,
2007. During his tenure with us he demonstrated a sincere passion for his work and proved to be a capable
and reliable member of our organization. Kiewit’s diversity of work and multifaceted responsibility structure
keeps its employees always engaged. As a result we develop and train employees that we can be proud
of. Ricardo always exhibited a strong work ethic, the utmost integrity and a genuine interest in the success
of his projects.
Throughout Ricardo’s employment he displayed an open mind and adapted to our company’s policies,
procedures, and controls quickly. At the start of 2008 he was transferred to a “mega project”, a bridge
replacement job for New York City DOT and earned the title of Business Manager (BM). While there, Ricardo
worked with a team of 5 Business Managers in a compartmentalized department arrangement. The
environment, along with several trips to our training facility in Omaha, Nebraska, gave him the necessary
skills to manage a project independently. In the second half of 2009, he was assigned as the sole project
BM for a 3 bridge rehabilitation/replacement project for The Long Island Rail Road. He successfully
completed the project with minimal hitches, considering its unique timeframe requirements, locations and
combination of staff. Expanding Ricardo’s employment responsibilities, he was stationed at the district
office where he was responsible for the business operations of three projects running simultaneously.
With job planning as a principal component of the Kiewit corporate culture, Ricardo, assisted with the
structuring of an efficient operations model and procedures. The “mega project” also allowed Ricardo to
supervise/manage clerical aids in Accounts payable, documents control and the front office. He possesses
a natural ability to absorb technical/practical knowledge that he effortlessly applied to all decision
making. Each project had its unique set of issues, which Ricardo was able to identify quickly and assure
acceptable results.
Ricardo also has great interpersonal skills. He adapts quickly to new environments and is very easy to
communicate with. His internal drive for results, coupled with his ability to tackle multiple challenges made
him an ideal candidate for special projects. As an example, with little hesitation, Ricardo gave a
presentation, at our annual district meeting, on ad-hoc reporting, an untraditional topic to our business
group. The presentation was both informative and inspired Kiewit’s BMs to add value to their projects by
driving home the idea that “what gets measured gets attention”. Ricardo was also a member of the
Quality Committee, where he was responsible for examining, inspecting and maintaining the records of
quality incidents for upper management’s review. Furthermore, Ricardo oversaw Insurance claim issues
and reporting for our asset risk management file. In general, Ricardo was exposed to a wide variety of
operational and contractual situations where he developed the necessary skills essential to become a
successful BM. His performance and technical skills were evaluated semi-annually, where he continually
met or exceed our expectations.
Ricardo’s decision to leave his position was solely to pursue his desire to further his academic aspirations.
Lastly, I express my formal recommendation and firmly believe he possesses the potential to transfer the
skills learned at Kiewit to any organization’s operations.
