2. have the new puppy owner in mind in
the first place. New puppy owners ask
themselves “how to train my puppy” if
they have their new dog at home at
the latest. Of course it is better
learning these things before you get a
dog than afterwards.
A lot of people take an adult dog from
the dog rescue or so. Not every dog
that comes to our homes that way
behaves well . These people might be
more interested in how to train adult
dogs than puppies.
Basic dog training covers basic dog commands and even more advanced positive
dog training like scent training, search games, tog tricks and the like.
Creating the Ultimate Family Dog
Getting our dogs and our children to have a safe, healthy and happy
relationship is not something that just happens by chance. And contrary
to what many dog owners think it’s not the default outcome.
It takes time and training – for both your dog and your kids.
In this article I’ll restrict myself to the fundamentals of all dog training.
To train a dog efficiently, we must understand the species dog as far as possible.
The closest relative of the dog is the wolf. Scientist learnt a lot from the wolf
behaviour.

3. As the wolves dogs are social beings living in packs like us humans. So they need
some social order. Our first duty is to establish us as the pack leaders.
With puppies and dogs in general, this is especially easy since we are the owners
of all the resources, i.e. food, toys, freedom and everything the dog needs.
First thing with a puppy is to establish rules. The puppy should be kept from
chewing shoes, furniture, carpets etc. Give him toys instead.
Something To Chew On
Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim, and dogs gotta chew. At least, that is
my belief, backed up with virtually no research whatsoever. This belief is
based on 1) understanding that the impressive teeth and jaw structure
of a dog is the Swiss Army knife of dentition, able to tear, rip, shear and
crunch without having to switch tools, 2) the inclusion of long chewing
bouts in the natural behavior of canids, 3) that an internet search on
“chewing in dogs” leads to a multitude … Read the Rest
Of course the puppy should be kept from releasing itself all over the house.
Establish in this time a signal to stop your puppy from whatever it is doing. I use a
sharp “NO” supported by a throwing chain thrown near the dog.
Since this is quite a hard time for your puppy you should attend often to him, pet
him and play with him. Play the coming game: walk away from your puppy and call
his name. If he comes to you give him praise and a treat. This will establish a
trustful relationship, and it is fun for both of you.
Next thing is to make sure the puppy gets his food at fixed times during the day.
So it starts to understand that the food comes from you that you are the keeper
of the resources. If your puppy leaves his bowl, remove it until the next feeding
time comes. This way your puppy will become a good eater that empties his bowl

4. within a couple of minutes or even seconds.
This is a prerequisite for training your dog using treats.
After you have established a “no” command the real fun starts. Ask your puppy
to perform small tasks such as “sit”, wait for food, and lay and so on. Do this with
any dog, especially with a puppy, in the gentlest way.
Keep training sessions as short as a couple of minutes and keep it fun for your
dog.
The general route you take in training is: Have your dog show the wanted
behaviour. There are different methods to do this for different tasks. I’ll go
deeper into this in other posts.
If your dog shows the action you want him to perform, enhance it positively and
start giving a command. Then fade out the original method, to trigger the action.
When your dog shows the action on giving just the command you are done.
For more complex tasks, as in the advanced positive dog training, chunk down the
whole train of action into single tasks the dog can manage easily.
This is the entire secret about any dog training . Ignore mistakes your dog might
make and enhance positively if he does something right. When I’ll cover the
detailed training of several tasks this will become much clearer.
