Medical condition - Cystic mass in the ovary
Brief description - An ovarian cyst is any fluid-filled sac
within the ovary, there are many types of cysts namely
follicular cysts, endometrial cyst, dermoid cysts,
cystadenomas, and other cysts due to pelvic inflammatory
diseases. Rarely these cysts may form into ovarian cancer.
4. Sign & Symptom
Signs & Symptoms –
Abdominal pain. Dull aching pain within the abdomen or
pelvis, especially during intercourse.
Uterine bleeding. Pain during or shortly after beginning or
end of the menstrual period, irregular periods, or
abnormal uterine bleeding or spotting.
Fullness, heaviness, pressure, swelling, or bloating in the
abdomen.
5. When a cyst ruptures from the ovary, there may be a
sudden and sharp pain in the lower abdomen on one
side.
Change in frequency or ease of urination (such as the
inability to fully empty the bladder), or difficulty with bowel
movements due to pressure on adjacent pelvic anatomy.
Constitutional symptoms such as fatigue, headaches,
Nausea or Vomiting, Weight gain.
6. Treatment
Treatment - Cysts associated with hypothyroidism or other
endocrine problems are managed by treating the
underlying condition.
7. Pain associated with ovarian cysts may be treated in
several ways:
Pain relievers such as acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs or opioids can be used.
While hormonal birth control prevents the development of
new cysts in those who frequently get them, it is not
useful for the treatment of current cysts.
8. Some cases require surgery. This may involve removing
the cyst, or one or both ovaries. Features that indicate the
need for surgery are
1. Persistent complex ovarian cysts
2. Persistent cysts that are causing symptoms
3. Complex ovarian cysts larger than 5 cm
4. Simple ovarian cysts larger 10 centimeters or larger
than 5 cm in postmenopausal patients
5. Women who are menopausal or perimenopausal

Case Primer
A 37 year old female suffering from a large cyst in left
adnexa measuring about 116 x 138 x 102 mm in size
(870cc in volume) (reports attached) and Has the complaint
of PCOS since 10 years and have been under various
treatments which were not fruitful.
10. Treatment given - Panchakarma: Virechana treatment was
given as a first line of treatment followed by medicines and
herbs specific to uterine health.
11. Result
Results - USG scan revealed drastic reduction in the side
of the cyst (reports attached) and became asymptomatic
within 3 months of treatment.
