Diet and exercise for weight loss
1. Diet and Exercise for Weight Loss
You've made the decision to want to lose weight, exercise, and in general start living a
healthier lifestyle. Maybe you're driven by vanity [wanting to look better], health
concerns [diabetes, family history of health disease, cancer, or strokes], or you're just
plan sick of feeling run down all the time. Congratulations - this is the first, and believe
me, the largest hurdle. Where you may go wrong in the next step is choosing the
completely wrong diet - the majority of people tend to gravitate to "fad" diets, diets that
incorporate pills and supplements, or diets that have prepackage meals that seems
like an easy "autopilot" way to lose weight. Don't fall into this trap - please. You will be
miserable and give up within weeks if not days or hours. Your body is a highly tuned
machine that has taken millions of years to evolve, and honestly it's natural state is to
be healthy, fit, and without disease. A fad diet, pills, and prepackaged meals are going
to create disparities between what you mentally want, what your body needs, and
cause discord between your brain and your body.
2. The book "The Secret" has a great section on how not to diet at all, but rather to taste and
enjoy every single bite of food you ingest - the theory being that aligning your mind
around appreciating each bite of food, your body will corresponding know what to do
with it [i.e. not absorb fats, extract only the protein, vitamins, and minerals it needs,
etc.]. While I'm not sure I completely buy this entire concept, the one thing I do buy is
you cannot lose weight if you are miserable eating or doing something - your mind will
be out of sync with your body, and you won't get a response from your body. So what
is the right approach? I think you need to start with diet - but not "A Diet". Instead, you
need to find a credible, certified nutritionist developed eating plan that simply starts
replacing junk entering your body with the actual types of food your body is evolved to
accept and need. Exercising first will not do much good if your body isn't getting what
it needs - it will just put further stress on your overall system and while you may
develop some toned muscle, your body is struggling to do so.
3. A "real" diet that helps you cut body fat, develop lean muscle, and help obtain that "six
pack" look will focus on gradually substituting real food in place of processed and fast
food. A credible diet will include foods like nuts, eggs, lean meats, specific types of
breads, fruits, vegetables, fish/seafood, and other "earth based" foods. The diet
should also lay out meal plans for you that you can ease in to over a period of days or
weeks, gradually expanding your taste buds to enjoy and even crave specific meals
that contain prescribed foods. You can't overlook how foods are prepared either -
some preparation methods are quite bad and create undesirable byproducts while
cooking, which again aren't good for your body. Be sure the diet you choose spells
these out AND explains why you need to prepare food a certain way. The right diet will
not feel like a burden for you to adopt, and over time you will almost automatically
begin adjusting your food selection around what you've become used to and know
makes you feel good.
4. The Beta Switch Contrast this with dreading the prepackage dinner meal you have to pop
in the microwave, or the inability to ever order something reasonable from a restaurant
menu...dreading eating due to an unreasonable and possibly ineffective meal plan will
never enable you to lose weight or get fit - you will give up long before then, or worse
the disconnect between your mind and your attitude will cause stress related
conditions in your health. Hopefully this has provided some background around how to
select a "diet" that is healthy and right for your mind and your body, and to not jump on
the latest trend and expect results and to be happy. Don't waste time repeating my
learning - follow my journey of selecting the right diet plan for me, and watch me as I
go through it week by week - what is my attitude, is it effective, are there support
mechanisms built in.
