1. Help Me Understand What is Compassion?
What's compassion? Empathy in my experience, giving them a piece of your heart is showing
kindness and love toward others, and asking for nothing back in return. I'm blessed to work with
their families and clients everyday, and to disperse compassion to people who might not receive it
otherwise, or often.
I recently had the chance to go to a customer who had been in Boca Raton, Florida who was
recuperating from a broken hip. I went to visit her to check to see how she was feeling, and I also
wanted to be sure that she understood that I was thinking of her.
When I walked in the area, her eyes lit up and she said, "What are you doing here?"
"I came to see you because I care about you, and I need to see how you're feeling." I reacted.
We talked for over an hour about her ideas on her treatment, the food of the facility, for after she
returned home, and her plans. As I was leaving, she gave me a big hug and said, "I 'm so happy you
came to see me!"
It made me feel really good that I possibly could reveal her love and kindness. It made a huge impact
together with her, although stopping by to see was such a small action from me.
We believe that compassion makes all the difference. There are lots of ways to show empathy and
they're able to be as easy as calling to check on someone who we understand is ill, or by visiting
with him or her if they are in the hospital. Revealing compassion may also not be as difficult as
taking the time to actually listen to others. We get so caught up in attempting to "fix" everything,
when often times, people simply want someone to listen to them, know that they're heard, and that
their feelings are validated.
I encourage everyone to be the definition of empathy also to show kindness and love toward
everyone you meet.
