1. Man shot by former APD officer files lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed against Leonardo Quintana, a former officer with the Austin
Police Department.
Quintana was involved in the controversial shooting of 18-year-old Nathaniel Sanders in
May 2009. While responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle, Quintana said
Sanders pulled a gun while in the vehicle's back seat.
Sir Lawrence Smith was also shot by Quintana during the shooting. He is now claiming
the former officer was reckless in his use of force in the incident.
Smith is asking for compensatory damages and coverage for medical expenses,
physical pain and lost wages.
The family of Nathaniel Sanders also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of
Austin. The city later rejected a proposed settlement earlier this year.
The Sanders family filed another suit in response, citing the city council broke a legal
contract by turning down the settlement.
Quintana was fired from the department on a DWI charge in January.
