Editor's Notes

  1. DOG: viewed as a symbol of fidelity & loyalty, a symbol of friendship
  2. Note the service coming from sideboard; server entering from kitchen which is behind the dining hall
  3. Baldaquin originated in Bahgdad. Harpist entertains. Two knives, two transparent glass drinking bowls, oval platter, 2 small loaves. Table is trestle, covered with white tablecloth
  4. Two long trestle tables seat about 20 guests. Wine flagons cook in bucket, round trenchers on tables, wind instruments accompany service.
  5. Image taken from a German manuscript ~ 1470. Two cardinal sins of gluttony and lust were thought to encourage each other, both physical sins. Meal in brothel is supposedly allegorical rather than actual portrayal of medieval dining habits.
  6. A rejected suitor invites the entire family of his hoped-for fiance, in rather grand style
  7. Crowded tabletops contrast with sparse medieval banquets. Full visibility and ease of service achieved by seating diners on one side only
  8. Dishes are arranged in a geometric pattern, leaving little space for glassware and serving plates. 1685
  9. Great piece montees on tables demonstrate a hangover from medieval times. Arrangements of fruits, rich gateaux are more 18 th C in character
  10. Discreet number of guests around oval table; servants working from sideboard; feeling of privacy
  11. Most elegant table, everything breathed an air of the most exquisite sensual pleasure. When the Marquis gave the signal, the servants disappeared.
