1. Types of Soda
Soda can either be carbonated water or carbonated soft drink, distinctive for creating that
pleasant fizz in the mouth, and is used to make various kinds of mixed drinks and also drank
on its own as a refreshing beverage. Below are the types of soda with culinary uses.
Soda water
Also known as carbonated water, sparkling water, fizzy water, or
seltzer, soda water is the simplest form of soda and is the foundation
for other kinds of soda. To make it, pressurized carbon dioxide is
dissolved into water. Sold in bottles, soda water can also be made at
home with a soda making machine or do-it-yourself kit.
Club soda
Identical to soda water and often interchanged with it in drinks, club soda
typically contains additives like salt and light flavorings.
Tonic water
The invention of bitter soda water flavored with quinine, which is a known
tonic, dates back to 1858. Called tonic water, it was combined with gin, which is a popular
botanical, to prevent malaria. Today, gin and tonic is one of the most popular drinks mixed
and ordered in bars. One of the most popular brands of tonic water is Schweppes, which
was first produced in the 1870s. Another popular tonic water brand is Canada Dry.
Ginger ale
Soda water lightly flavored with ginger, sugar, and other ingredients,
ginger ale is a refreshing sweet and spicy drink enjoyed on its own or
mixed with other drinks. Ginger ale can either be golden or dry; golden
is stronger and darker than the dry kinds. Dry ginger ale is more
versatile and thus pairs better when mixed with other drinks. Some
popular cocktails that make use of ginger ale include Gin Buck, Shirley
Temple, or the whiskey Highball.
Ginger beer
Made with a combination of ginger, lemon, sugar, and carbonated
water, ginger beer typically has less carbonation and can either
contain alcohol or not. Ginger beer is used to make the cocktails
Moscow Mule and Dark and Stormy. It can be bought in natural food
markets and specialty stores and can also be made at home.
Citrus soda
Soda water flavored with citrus, typically lemon and lime, and syrup to
make it sweet, citrus soda is available in most stores. Some of the
popular citrus sodas include Sprite, 7-Up, and Sierra Mist. Orange soda
and grapefruit soda are also commonly available.
2. Cola
Caffeinated soda with a distinctively sweet syrupy taste, cola is one of
the most loved beverages in the world. It is also used to make popular
cocktails like Rum and Coke, Cuba Libre, Colorado Bulldog, and Long
Island Iced Tea. Coke and Pepsi are the two most known brands of
cola.
