2. What does salinity mean?
Salinity is the saltiness or
dissolved salt content of a body
of water.
It has been traditional to
express salinity not as
percent(%), but as parts per
thousand(‰)
3. Sea water is salty or saline in
taste...
This is because the sea
contains a great variety of salts
and minerals in solution.
These minerals are brought
down down by the rivers in the
silt they carry.
4. Salinity varies from place to
place depending on two main
factors :
1. rate of evaporation.
2. The amount of fresh water
added by rivers and rainfall.
5. DEAD SEA
it has the maximum salinity of
240 per thousand.
ARCTIC OCEAN
it has the lowest salinity of 20
per thousand.
6.
7. Why are Rivers not salty?
River water does not taste salty
since the amount of minerals
present is relatively small. In the
ocean the concentration of salt
increases with continued
evaporation.
