Montreal’s Lachine Canal in Autumn | In Photos
The Lachine Canal boasts one of the longest bike paths in Montreal
The Lachine Canal is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Montreal. Its historic roots can be traced all the way back
to the city’s beginnings, when the canal was used as an inland waterway and (unfortunately) a waste depository for the
many mills which lined its shores. Luckily, the industrial leftovers have since been cleaned up, save for the antique brick
factories which still stand today, much to the delight of those wishing to live in a place with great history. The Canal spans
the south side of the city in almost its entirety, from East to West. Along its shores, citizens enjoy beautiful natural scenery,
outdoor activities, and unique waterside neighborhoods like Griffintown, Pointe-Sainte-Charles, and of course, Lachine
itself. Visitors and locals alike can take part in sunlit picnics on the banks of the rapids, or rent a kayak or bicycle at many
of the recreational spots along the way. Getting there is easy thanks to the 14.5 kilometre bike path which follows the
canal. It winds cyclists along to the Atwater market, the locks, and to amazing views of the downtown core. It’s no wonder
that the areas surrounding the canal have seen a boom in condo growth lately, with eager outdoor lovers wanting to get a
piece of this lovely, post-industrial Montreal area immersed in natural splendor. We explored the area recently, and wanted
to share our fascination with you!
