Window Treatments and Curtains for a Sophisticated Interior

With the cold weather now coursing throughout the country, it is but necessary to increase window
coverings. The sales for curtains and other window covers have gone up, unsurprisingly. Windows,
during the coldest weathers, are the largest sources of heat loss in homes.
Walls differ in insulating capacities from R12 to R40, with the former as the most common building code
value while the latter is known as the most insulated. Windows could be as low as R2 so you can just
imagine how much heat is lost through it. Even windows with the highest efficiencies can only reach
about R6 or R7.
The biggest benefit of window coverings is the provision of insulation. Window treatments offer
insulation or a means to keep the room warm during the coldest autumn or winter seasons. This same
aspect will be the means to keep the coolness inside a room during summer. This is why it is important
to choose energy efficient window treatments from the onset.
The most popular choices include –
Cellular Shades: These can easily increase insulation as it also reduces the consequences that come with
icy air. These come in a various fabrics and styles. They can be used to darken a room or to completely
achieve black out. The latter option increases insulation.
Vertical Blinds: This can be the most stunning addition that you can have in your home. Apart from its
elegance, it is also effective in insulating your place. This will allow you to enjoy the beauty of summer
without being exposed to the detrimental effects of cooling devices.
Vertical blinds have slats that are attached to the top head rail and can be operated with a pull cord or a
chain. You do not just control the temperature in a room, you can also control the amount of light that
you allow in.
Fabric vertical blinds are most common but you can also purchase paper, leather or vinyl blinds.
Shutters: These are most suitable for urban living. These are window coverings that can be used either
on the interior or exterior of buildings but these are mostly used in homes. Shutters can be used instead
of curtains. These have louvers that can be operated (opened or closed) as the user deems fit. Blinds
and curtains are beneficial too but shutters can be more aesthetically pleasing.
If you want to achieve a Mediterranean style, then it is time to use shutters. They can give homes an
old-fashioned yet homely feel. These can also add value to any home. If you want your shutters to be
custom-made for you, this can be easily arranged.
They can now be crafted according to the size and style that you want. They can be created with or
without louvers and can be painted accordingly.
Shutters are also durable, hence, they can last for many years. There are even shutter manufacturers
that offer lifetime warranties because they are pretty confident that the product will last. Most shutters
are made from solid wood.
Curtains: These are high maintenance window coverings. They need to be taken down when dry
cleaning is required. But depending on their design, they can be used to let in ample natural lighting.
The function of the room will greatly affect your curtain choice. If you want more natural light, then you
can buy the sheer type. For bedrooms, you can purchase the heavier and darker varieties.
Use a rail, pole or pelmet to hang your curtains. Choose colors that go with your home’s theme. Red
accentuates great views; greens and blues can calm the senses so they are best used in bedrooms;
yellow brings about feelings of cheerfulness.
