First depicted in ancient Egyptian reliefs of the
2nd millennium BC, it depicts both fist-fighters
and spectators. Both pictures show bare-fisted
contests. Other depictions in the 2nd
millennium BC can be seen in reliefs of the
Mesopotamian nations of Assyria and
Babylonia, and in Hittite art from Asia Minor.
The earliest evidence of fist fighting with any
kinds of gloves can be found on Minoan Crete
(c. 1500–900 BC), and on Sardinia.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame opened in
Canastota in 1989. The first inductees in 1990
included Jack Johnson, Benny Leonard, Jack
Dempsey, Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson,
Archie Moore, and Muhammad Ali. Other worldclass figures[citation needed] include Salvador
Sanchez, Fabio Martella, Roberto "Manos de
Piedra" Durán, Ricardo Lopez, Gabriel "Flash"
Elorde, Vicente Saldivar, Ismael Laguna, Eusebio
Pedroza, Carlos Monzón, Azumah Nelson, Rocky
Marciano, Pipino Cuevas and Ken Buchanan. The
Hall of Fame's induction ceremony is held every
June as part of a four-day event.
