Is it Fair?
DNA – What do these key words
mean?
■ Equality
■ Identity
■ Injustice
■ Prejudice
■ Discrimination
■ Charity
■ Zakah
■ Sadaqah
■ Authority
What is this topic about? Watch and
remember!
What do we mean when we say
‘everybody is equal’?
■ Equality – Everyone should have
equal rights
■ Identity – A sense of who you are,
character and personality
■ Injustice – not treated fairly
■ Make a list of where there is
injustice in the World or Inequality
What does religion say about Equality
and Prejudice?
■ ‘So God created human beings,
making them to be like himself. He
created male and female and
blessed them’ Genesis
■ ‘All people are equal… as the
teeth of a comb’ Hadith
■ How do religious believers think
we should treat each other?
Attitudes towards Wealth and money
A need – something that is essential
to life
A want – Is not vital to survival
Problems arise when people cannot
distinguish between wants and needs
‘The world has enough for everyone’s
need but not for everyone’s greed’
(Gandhi)
Is money good or bad?
Religious attitudes to wealth
■ Christianity
■ Jesus said ‘It is easier for a camel
to go through the eye of a needle
than it is for a rich man to enter
the kingdom of heaven’
■ What did he mean?
■ ‘Love for money is the root of all
evil’ Bible
■ Explain this teaching
■ Muhammad pbuh said ‘If you
possessed all the gold on the
earth you could not buy your place
in Paradise with it’
■ What did he mean?
■ ‘He who seeks riches out of greed
is not blessed. He is like one who
eats but is not filled’ Hadith
■ Explain this teaching
How can a religious believer show
their belief about wealth in their life
■ Islam
■ Zakah – All Muslims pay 2.5% of
their income to charity. This is
compulsory
■ Sadaqah – This is giving money to
charity without being asked
■ Muslims support each other and
anyone in need through charity
■ Christianity
■ Some Christians decide to give up
all their money and live a life
supporting and helping others.
E.g. Mother Teresa
■ Most Christians do not believe
that money is bad it is how you
use it that is the problem.
■ They believe you should be
generous in helping others.
Christian Aid and Islamic Relief –
Putting faith into action

Exam Practice
■ a) Explain what religious believers
mean by authority 2 marks
■ B) Explain how having a religious
faith might encourage a person
not to be racist 4 marks
■ Authority means power over
others through teaching, for
Christians and Muslims this
comes through their Holy books.
■ Both Christianity and Islam
believe that human beings were
made equal, they condemn
racism. In the Bible Jesus told the
story of the Good Samaritan. This
taught…......
Exam Practice
■ C) The media should only report
good news
■ Give 2 reasons why a religious
believer might agree or disagree
with this statement 4 marks
■ D) Explain from 2 different
religious traditions the teachings
about prejudice 6
marks
■ In the Bible Jesus said ‘I have
come to bring good news to the
poor and needy’ Here the Good
news refers to the love and
support Jesus wants us to give.
So a Christian might agree with
the statement. However,…..
■ Christianity – ‘Love your
neighbour as you love yourself’
■ Islam ‘ Do not ill treat foreigners’
Qur’an
Exam Practice
■ E) ‘Being rich is bad’
■ Do you agree? Give reasons for
your answer, showing that you
have thought of more than one
point of view. You must include
reference to religious beliefs in
your answer
■ Muslims believe it is their duty to
give to charity through the third
pillar zakat.this means............
They also practice Sadaqah, this
is....... In the Hadith it says ‘you
cannot buy a place in Paradise’
■ Christians believe that ‘money is
the root of all evil’ This means it
can take over your life and
become your own God to worship.
They also believe.........
Think what do you need to learn now
to be successful in this topic?
