Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10
Apparently there is no good reason that this ought not to be an all-the-calendar year minn kota
pieces ground, however it seems to not be stopped at much in the winter. It furnishes, nonetheless, a
very good summer time handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring a few months it
abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all minn kota elements of big size.
Roseway Bank. This bank is situated N. of the western element of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne
Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy away from Lockport, Nova Scotia, to the
southeastern edge. It is oblong in shape and also small magnitude--about 270 square geographic
miles. Its greatest duration is 21 miles and its particular greatest breadth 15 miles. It runs from 43?
12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' western side longitude and also at the north
west corner is connected with the shore limit of 60 fathoms from a narrow the neck and throat.
Depths come from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; in the Northeast
Peak the bottom is of yellow-colored mud and gravel.
Currents in this area are not almost so powerful as about Cape Browns and Sable Lender, their
general direction being WSW. and ENE the westerly much the more robust, though the force and
course of both are much relying on the wind.
Hake, halibut and pollock occur, the best minn kota elements months simply being from May
possibly to October, when the banking institution is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia,
although the principal sea food considered here arecod and haddock, and cusk. Several New Great
britain craft also fish here.
La Have Lender. Situated eastward of Browns S and Financial institution. and E. of Roseway Bank. It
extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' north latitude a distance of 52 mls, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' to
the west longitude a distance around 54 a long way. The bank is nearly divided into two portions, in
which the eastern (La Have Bank correct) extends N and S. 39 kilometers and the western portion
almost E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total section of the bank is about 1,200 miles.
The bottom is largely coarsepebbles and gravel, and rock, with more compact areas of yellow sand
distributed here and there. Depths manage from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is certainly much relying on
the pressure and route of the wind flow and is usually quite solid during easterly blows, even though
the general pair of the currents is to the westward.
The main fishing upon this bank before has been for haddock and cod: and while previous reports,
(1881) speak of this as having once been a favorite sport fishing ground for halibut and declare that
it was not at time of much importance because fishery, the figures for this particular ground for that
year 1923 show the halibut find to have been third in volume and first in value of the species
undertaken there. Actually, the get of halibut here helps make quite an imposing body when the
fairly small dimensions of the ground is considered.
Little Los angeles Have and the La Have Ridges are simply just continuations of this back towards
the European Bank for the distance around 45 miles. This locations the eastern limit in
approximately 62? 50' west longitude, the upper and the southern part of boundaries getting about
as those of Los angeles Have Financial institution. The portion of the ridges is approximately 1,575
miles. The base here is a succession of ridges of pebbles and pea gravel with occasional patches of
rocks. Depths come from 53 to 80 fathoms. The current, from time to time strong, is weaker here
than even farther W. around the bank and, except while in easterly wind, is but little seen. The
general set up is westerly.
"The Ridges" says the report before mentioned, "were for several years one of many favorite hotels
for halibut catchers in winter, and many excellent catches of cod had been taken right here at that
year. At present but few halibut are trapped except in the deep h2o along the the southern area of
edge of the earth, where they sometimes have been found quite plentiful during almost the entire
year." Seemingly there is not much improvement in these situations since the writer's time; fish
appear to be present here In about the same levels as in past years.
One piece of bottom part, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms over red clay, lying about in 43? 08' to
43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an excellent spring and early
summer ground. Apparently red-clay underside indicates an excellent halibut floor, as this species is
usually provide where such a bottom is located.
Hake are normally found in excellent numbers in the deep normal water about the corners of the
floor and even around the Ridges.
These waters are usually heavily fished from Canadian ports, plus a fair number of American vessels
visit them each year, a lot of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester.
Scandinavian Bank. Eighteen miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is actually about 3
miles lengthy in an E. and W. direction by about ? distance wide. Generally, the bottom is level, with
depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are rocky and well-defined, the bottom across the
deeper parts being composed mostly of small black colored and yellow-colored pebbles.
This really is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and
halibut occur in October in the deeper waters about it. It is also a reasonable summer cod ground,
and cusk are present in the serious water in regards to the edges while in most of the 12 months. In
basic, species and seasons tend to be as on Roseway.
Western Bank. This is one of the most essential fishing grounds of your western Atlantic, whether as
regards size or the great quantity of its item. It is placed S. of Cape Breton Island and the eastern
element of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 44 and 55'? 46' to the north latitude as well as
the meridians of 59? 62 and 04'? 35' west longitude. It has a length of 156 mls and a breadth,
including the Center Ground, of 76 miles. It is about 420 mls E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern
edge, meaning about 48 hours' steaming for the otter-trawl fleet.
The typical contour of the bank within the 65-fathom range, as placed down on the Admiralty graph,
approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the more axis running NE. by E. and SW. by W.; but over
a extensive area to eastward of the center of the lender, soundings of less than 50 fathoms hook it
up directly with all the Middle Soil, which we certainly have here contained in the some lender. The
total magnitude of the banking institution thus identified is about 7,000 rectangular geographical
mls. Off its eastern stop lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the fishermen) with The Gully between, as
well as a short range of the traditional western edge are the La Have Ridges.
The depths from the southern edge of the bank improve rapidly from 80 to700 and 1,200, and even
1,400 fathoms. In the eastern end is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", along and narrow,
crescent-shaped height seemingly lowering in location each year, established entirely of sand which
has been blown Into innumerable hummocks and dunes. Away from both finishes of the island are
dangerous and long fine sand bars. The duration of the island is 20 mls; its very best width is about
1? a long way. It is said that the Northwest Light has been transferred three times due to the fact
that the american end of your island continues to be literally mesmerised. It is in an E. and W.
direction, and also the depth water over the night clubs for a length of 7 to 10 miles out does not go
beyond 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles a greater distance out the depths do not surpass 10 to 11
fathoms. Within recent times fishermen have reported the look of a beach sand shoal about 5 or 6 a
long way SE. from the Northeast Light-weight. This is believed to appear at low water.
In general, the financial institution slopes S. and W. from the isle, depths including 18 to 60 fathoms.
The bottom is usually sandy with patches of gravel and pebbles. Currents are often very strong
about Sable Isle and are relatively irregular; evidently they are significantly influenced by the winds.
About the other parts of the bank usually there is but little existing, whatever there may be usually
tending toward the west.
Earlier the cod and halibut were the minnkota parts meals fishes most taken right here, but with the
changed strategies in the fishery (as the growth of the otter-trawl fleet) along with a changed taste
in our open public the haddock catch has become the second most essential in the invoices of
seafood readily available waters. The halibut fishery stands thirdly in the listing. Other bottom part
feeders appear in less figures, the pollock and the cusk perhaps being next to be able of significance,
with hake and a large amount of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed
as sole.
Remembering the tiny amount of haddock within the fares extracted from these seas in previous
years, the writer asked numerous old-time fishermen as to its abundance in the past. The reply was
normally Oh you will find, there were always haddock there; occasionally they worried us a whole
lot." Then, noting my surprise at so getting it, "You know, the haddock isn't much like a salt minn
kota parts."
It will be observed that in 1923 the haddock get here was a very good 2nd to the cod catch in
poundage, even though not so valuable proportionately. In the otter-trawl catch using this ground it
will likely be noted how the positions of these two species are reversed. These steamers certainly
take more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other offshore grounds--probably the result of
functioning in the shoaler waters as well as on the easier bottom because of the difficulty of
dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered soil, which the cod seems to like, as a rule. If it is so desired,
but the bottom around the Western Lender is of these nature regarding offer small obstruction on
the passage of your net, so that virtually all aspects of it may be fished by this approach; and this,
added to the identified movements from the cod colleges makes it probable at certain seasons of the
season to catch a larger proportion on this species.
Haddock are found regarding the bars at both ends of the tropical isle in Mar and from that time to
about June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also plentiful 18 miles W. through the Northwest
Gentle at the very same seasons as well as at the same depths. DuringMay possibly and April, and
June they come in close to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even to 1 fathom. Through all of
those other year (except for the cold months, when they have moved off into much deeper water)
they could be found throughout the bank on sandy bottom in 28 to 30 fathoms, exactly where most of
the ray trawl angling is carried on.
You will find a good cod school each year on the fairly level base along the southwestern and
western ends of the ground in 70 fathoms and a lot more from Feb 1 to May 1, and in most years
some this species is adopted this area. In May this school seems to have moved on to a piece of
bottom about 20 miles extended lying SW. from the Northwest Light and having depths averaging 27
fathoms. With fair fishing for cod on the Traditional western Bank in the course of most of the
calendar year, they seem to be most abundant in the first of March to June. Apparently this species
trips this ground in sizeable numbers throughout the spawning year, though the wintertime school
on this page appears to be small compared to that on Georges. In the winter months the cod are
mainly discovered upon the western section of the bank, moving into the shoaler waters toward
Sable Island as the springtime advances (throughout March and April), the "Flex" in the island and
also the neighborhood from the bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they can be seen utilizing the hook or
can be "jigged." being favored grounds. The earth lying W. from the Northwest about, Light as well
as on the North west Bar (18 miles W, from the lighting), is a favored cod soil in May possibly and
June. The shoal water within the rocky bottom WNW from the Northwest Lighting furnishes great
cod minn kota parts from June 10 to July 1. This piece starts just outside the 3-mile stretch of
breakers running out of the land and extends overseas in a usually westerly path to 24 fathoms. Very
much hand-lining is completed here.
From the shoal drinking water, in April and May, the fish seem to be feeding on the "lant,"
(Ammodytes americanus). It is said how the minn kota pieces taken on the bottom close to the
tropical island are small compared to those located farther to the west. The shoal water of your
northern shore of the island is said to obtain good cod grounds and favorite locations for "dory
hands-upholster." The cod universities seem to appear on the Upper Peak (SE. from the Northeast
Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from very same point 28 miles) at the end of March as well as the first of
April, shifting N. and W. to the island. The cod of Sable Tropical island are said to be fine, firm minn
kota pieces, perhaps due to the abundance of the "reddish colored clams" (bank clams) on these
grounds.
The cod and haddock fishery is carried on by American and Canadian cruising otter and vessels
trawlers, an increasing number of English and French vessels of the latter class performing the
fishery of this ground each year.
Halibut are found on the Western Lender virtually all the entire year at depths varying using the
seasons. As being a halibut financial institution, this, together with the Gully and Quereau--actually,
all one piece of terrain--ranks 2nd only to the Grand Lender Itself. The most effective fishing here for
halibut is found from January to October. There are several places about and on your budget that the
halibut seems to like, as the Optimum of Pike, 85 mls W. by S. in the Northwest Light of Sable
Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 kilometers; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in May;
thence out into 100 and 150 fathoms in June; in fact, pursuing the 100--fathom curve over the edge
of this bank, beyond the Northeast Top (40 miles SE. through the Northeast Lighting), into the Gully
and around the Southern Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this
piece of underside in July. Often the minn kota parts are close to the isle in the spring, where the
water is really shoal that they may be seen using the bait or playing with the hook before you take.
InApr and May, and June a good halibut ground is in 18 fathoms 24 mls WNW. from Sable Tropical
island.
The European Bank seems to be a good giving ground for both cod and halibut mainly because it
abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, and also at certain intervals there are many smaller sized
species of seafood upon it, for example the lant and herring, on which these varieties and the
haddock, also, particularly prey. Plenty of swordfish is taken within August and September, mainly
by American vessels.
Banquereau. Segregated from the American Bank with the Gully, it has a very unnatural form--the
primary bank roughly rectangular, using a narrow westerly extension of comparatively typical form.
Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest size about 47 miles, and its total area about
2,800 miles.
The main portion of the financial institution lies in between 44? 04' and 45? 01' north latitude and
67? 10' and 59? 00' to the west longitude, and the western prolongation lies in between 44? 24' and
44? 42' north latitude and 69? 00' and 80? 05' western side longitude. North of Banquereau lies
Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine, remote from 2 to 15 miles according to the places that
measurements are taken. If any current, the currents here are of various force, significantly
influenced by the wind, so that several days of strong tides may be then intervals if you find little.
About the eastern part of Quereau is surely an area of shoal ground called the Rocky Underside,
having a range of about 18 fathoms; in other places depths operate from 18 to 50 fathoms. You can
find scattered areas of yellow sand and gravel, even though typically the bottom is rocky.
Cod and halibut are the primary food fish hake, considered and haddock and cusk being consumed
small amounts. The Rocky Bottom, a shoal floor of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was
much resorted to by dory handliners in summer. The cod are most plentiful in the eastern section of
the bank, though occasional great fares are taken in the direction of the west. The most effective cod
minn kota parts on this bank is from May until September, if the schools gather to feed with the lant,
squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then very abundant.
Halibut are found on this page all the calendar year off the sides in 100 to 400 fathoms. Some of
these may be fish in migration northward, however apparently these are generally reproduction and
giving grounds for this particular species, in fact it is not uncommon for a university to remain for
weeks as well as months in just one locality.
The primary halibut grounds are down the southern and eastern borders from the bank--the
Southwest Prong and the South west Cove (in approximately 44? N. lat. and between 58? 58 and
30'? 55' W. long), the Middle Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), and also the Eastern Slope
(44? 28' to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These strong-h2o areas are rocky and
support an incredibly rich expansion ofcorals and gorgonians, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope
has an abundance of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are excellent hand-line
grounds for cod. The halibut, too, rss feeds to a substantial extent after these red clams.
The Stone Fencing off the eastern slope of Quereau is an extremely rocky component of ground
filled with "bushes" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is an excellent halibut terrain although it is
practically impossible to haul the gear by hand and the application of the "gurdy" (a roller turned by
way of a crank and fastened to the dory's bow for winding within the trawl) will become necessary.
Infrequent fares of halibut are taken on and about the Rocky Underside in 20 to 25 fathoms from
July 1 to August 1.
The Gully. This is the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western Banking
institution. It runs in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, converting somewhat
abruptly S. at its eastern end and continuing down between the eastern end of Western Bank and
the Southwest Prong of Banquereau. The full length is all about 80 miles, the greatest width about
20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms over a bottom of gravel, rocks and beach sand and
dirt. The rocky and gravelly portions develop several ridges separated by areas of finer materials,
except in the eastern section, in which the intervals involving are mostly protected by pebbles and
sharp stones. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of different strength, significantly affected by
the easterly wind.
The Gully is a very significant halibut soil. The halibut are not found in great phone numbers all over
the soil, perhaps the best of the minn kota parts getting on the difficult and gravelly ridges and
slopes included between the meridians of 69? and 80? western side longitude. This rocky base is full
of food, along with the lant and herring tend to be plentiful within their period. In the spring the
halibut seem to be especially several in the upper and northwestern elements of the bank,
afterwards, in June and July, moving even farther out. Some, are found within winter. Even though
the cod is sometimes found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms, it will not are most often of typical
occurrence; and apparently you will find almost no haddock here, possibly because of the level of the
normal water and the nature of the bottom.
Artimon Bank. Has an area of some 120 rectangular miles using a bottom of gravel and rocksdepths
and rocks of 38 to 50 fathoms. It is actually but unknown because of the habit of the anglers to use
the larger grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present right here, however. The lender lies
N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from it by a thin, deep-water route.
Misaine Bank. Lies N. of the traditional western two-thirds of Quereau, at one position very close to,
but in standard the banks are separated by some 20 miles of deep water. Its very best length is 80
mls and its very best width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms over a bottom damaged and
rocky. A few halibut trips are landed from it in most yrs, even though it is not of much importance as
a minn kota parts terrain.
Canso Banking institution. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Lender, lying within an E, and W.
course; its span is 45 miles and its greatest thickness 13 a long way, its region being about 425
rectangular miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms more than a bottom of sand, with spots of
gravel and pebbles. More fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; perhaps it is overshadowed by the
inclusion of its larger sized Western, Quereau and neighbors Banks, with which grounds it forms
almost one component of bottom, only narrow, deep-h2o channels separating them, even though it is
not of great importance and importance being a minn kota pieces ground, especially as evaluated by
the use of it by the American citizen fleet. These larger reasons are heavily fished each by American
vessels and by those from Nova Scotia ports as well as by French and English language otter
trawlers.
The figures given elsewhere and here in this particular report are taken from the published bulletins
of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include only the landings of vessels of 5 tons net, or
older, at the plug-ins of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me.

[Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) made a map in 1505
demonstrating Sable Island, dreaded and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, where he
named it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de World."
Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, says that the Portuguese had manufactured an interesting
settlement here for shipwrecked mariners. This, "On intelligence we had of any Portugal who was
himself provide when the Portugals, above 30 years earlier (thus before 1551) do put after the island
neat and swine to breed of dog, which were considering that exceedingly multiplied."]

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10 Apparently there is no good reason that this ought not to be an all-the-calendar year minn kota pieces ground, however it seems to not be stopped at much in the winter. It furnishes, nonetheless, a very good summer time handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring a few months it abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all minn kota elements of big size. Roseway Bank. This bank is situated N. of the western element of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy away from Lockport, Nova Scotia, to the southeastern edge. It is oblong in shape and also small magnitude--about 270 square geographic miles. Its greatest duration is 21 miles and its particular greatest breadth 15 miles. It runs from 43? 12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' western side longitude and also at the north west corner is connected with the shore limit of 60 fathoms from a narrow the neck and throat. Depths come from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; in the Northeast Peak the bottom is of yellow-colored mud and gravel. Currents in this area are not almost so powerful as about Cape Browns and Sable Lender, their general direction being WSW. and ENE the westerly much the more robust, though the force and course of both are much relying on the wind. Hake, halibut and pollock occur, the best minn kota elements months simply being from May possibly to October, when the banking institution is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, although the principal sea food considered here arecod and haddock, and cusk. Several New Great britain craft also fish here. La Have Lender. Situated eastward of Browns S and Financial institution. and E. of Roseway Bank. It extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' north latitude a distance of 52 mls, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' to the west longitude a distance around 54 a long way. The bank is nearly divided into two portions, in which the eastern (La Have Bank correct) extends N and S. 39 kilometers and the western portion almost E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total section of the bank is about 1,200 miles. The bottom is largely coarsepebbles and gravel, and rock, with more compact areas of yellow sand distributed here and there. Depths manage from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is certainly much relying on the pressure and route of the wind flow and is usually quite solid during easterly blows, even though the general pair of the currents is to the westward. The main fishing upon this bank before has been for haddock and cod: and while previous reports, (1881) speak of this as having once been a favorite sport fishing ground for halibut and declare that it was not at time of much importance because fishery, the figures for this particular ground for that year 1923 show the halibut find to have been third in volume and first in value of the species undertaken there. Actually, the get of halibut here helps make quite an imposing body when the fairly small dimensions of the ground is considered. Little Los angeles Have and the La Have Ridges are simply just continuations of this back towards the European Bank for the distance around 45 miles. This locations the eastern limit in approximately 62? 50' west longitude, the upper and the southern part of boundaries getting about as those of Los angeles Have Financial institution. The portion of the ridges is approximately 1,575 miles. The base here is a succession of ridges of pebbles and pea gravel with occasional patches of rocks. Depths come from 53 to 80 fathoms. The current, from time to time strong, is weaker here
  • 2. than even farther W. around the bank and, except while in easterly wind, is but little seen. The general set up is westerly. "The Ridges" says the report before mentioned, "were for several years one of many favorite hotels for halibut catchers in winter, and many excellent catches of cod had been taken right here at that year. At present but few halibut are trapped except in the deep h2o along the the southern area of edge of the earth, where they sometimes have been found quite plentiful during almost the entire year." Seemingly there is not much improvement in these situations since the writer's time; fish appear to be present here In about the same levels as in past years. One piece of bottom part, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms over red clay, lying about in 43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an excellent spring and early summer ground. Apparently red-clay underside indicates an excellent halibut floor, as this species is usually provide where such a bottom is located. Hake are normally found in excellent numbers in the deep normal water about the corners of the floor and even around the Ridges. These waters are usually heavily fished from Canadian ports, plus a fair number of American vessels visit them each year, a lot of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester. Scandinavian Bank. Eighteen miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is actually about 3 miles lengthy in an E. and W. direction by about ? distance wide. Generally, the bottom is level, with depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are rocky and well-defined, the bottom across the deeper parts being composed mostly of small black colored and yellow-colored pebbles. This really is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibut occur in October in the deeper waters about it. It is also a reasonable summer cod ground, and cusk are present in the serious water in regards to the edges while in most of the 12 months. In basic, species and seasons tend to be as on Roseway. Western Bank. This is one of the most essential fishing grounds of your western Atlantic, whether as regards size or the great quantity of its item. It is placed S. of Cape Breton Island and the eastern element of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 44 and 55'? 46' to the north latitude as well as the meridians of 59? 62 and 04'? 35' west longitude. It has a length of 156 mls and a breadth, including the Center Ground, of 76 miles. It is about 420 mls E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, meaning about 48 hours' steaming for the otter-trawl fleet. The typical contour of the bank within the 65-fathom range, as placed down on the Admiralty graph, approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the more axis running NE. by E. and SW. by W.; but over a extensive area to eastward of the center of the lender, soundings of less than 50 fathoms hook it up directly with all the Middle Soil, which we certainly have here contained in the some lender. The total magnitude of the banking institution thus identified is about 7,000 rectangular geographical mls. Off its eastern stop lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the fishermen) with The Gully between, as well as a short range of the traditional western edge are the La Have Ridges. The depths from the southern edge of the bank improve rapidly from 80 to700 and 1,200, and even 1,400 fathoms. In the eastern end is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", along and narrow, crescent-shaped height seemingly lowering in location each year, established entirely of sand which has been blown Into innumerable hummocks and dunes. Away from both finishes of the island are dangerous and long fine sand bars. The duration of the island is 20 mls; its very best width is about
  • 3. 1? a long way. It is said that the Northwest Light has been transferred three times due to the fact that the american end of your island continues to be literally mesmerised. It is in an E. and W. direction, and also the depth water over the night clubs for a length of 7 to 10 miles out does not go beyond 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles a greater distance out the depths do not surpass 10 to 11 fathoms. Within recent times fishermen have reported the look of a beach sand shoal about 5 or 6 a long way SE. from the Northeast Light-weight. This is believed to appear at low water. In general, the financial institution slopes S. and W. from the isle, depths including 18 to 60 fathoms. The bottom is usually sandy with patches of gravel and pebbles. Currents are often very strong about Sable Isle and are relatively irregular; evidently they are significantly influenced by the winds. About the other parts of the bank usually there is but little existing, whatever there may be usually tending toward the west. Earlier the cod and halibut were the minnkota parts meals fishes most taken right here, but with the changed strategies in the fishery (as the growth of the otter-trawl fleet) along with a changed taste in our open public the haddock catch has become the second most essential in the invoices of seafood readily available waters. The halibut fishery stands thirdly in the listing. Other bottom part feeders appear in less figures, the pollock and the cusk perhaps being next to be able of significance, with hake and a large amount of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed as sole. Remembering the tiny amount of haddock within the fares extracted from these seas in previous years, the writer asked numerous old-time fishermen as to its abundance in the past. The reply was normally Oh you will find, there were always haddock there; occasionally they worried us a whole lot." Then, noting my surprise at so getting it, "You know, the haddock isn't much like a salt minn kota parts." It will be observed that in 1923 the haddock get here was a very good 2nd to the cod catch in poundage, even though not so valuable proportionately. In the otter-trawl catch using this ground it will likely be noted how the positions of these two species are reversed. These steamers certainly take more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other offshore grounds--probably the result of functioning in the shoaler waters as well as on the easier bottom because of the difficulty of dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered soil, which the cod seems to like, as a rule. If it is so desired, but the bottom around the Western Lender is of these nature regarding offer small obstruction on the passage of your net, so that virtually all aspects of it may be fished by this approach; and this, added to the identified movements from the cod colleges makes it probable at certain seasons of the season to catch a larger proportion on this species. Haddock are found regarding the bars at both ends of the tropical isle in Mar and from that time to about June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also plentiful 18 miles W. through the Northwest Gentle at the very same seasons as well as at the same depths. DuringMay possibly and April, and June they come in close to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even to 1 fathom. Through all of those other year (except for the cold months, when they have moved off into much deeper water) they could be found throughout the bank on sandy bottom in 28 to 30 fathoms, exactly where most of the ray trawl angling is carried on. You will find a good cod school each year on the fairly level base along the southwestern and western ends of the ground in 70 fathoms and a lot more from Feb 1 to May 1, and in most years some this species is adopted this area. In May this school seems to have moved on to a piece of bottom about 20 miles extended lying SW. from the Northwest Light and having depths averaging 27 fathoms. With fair fishing for cod on the Traditional western Bank in the course of most of the
  • 4. calendar year, they seem to be most abundant in the first of March to June. Apparently this species trips this ground in sizeable numbers throughout the spawning year, though the wintertime school on this page appears to be small compared to that on Georges. In the winter months the cod are mainly discovered upon the western section of the bank, moving into the shoaler waters toward Sable Island as the springtime advances (throughout March and April), the "Flex" in the island and also the neighborhood from the bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they can be seen utilizing the hook or can be "jigged." being favored grounds. The earth lying W. from the Northwest about, Light as well as on the North west Bar (18 miles W, from the lighting), is a favored cod soil in May possibly and June. The shoal water within the rocky bottom WNW from the Northwest Lighting furnishes great cod minn kota parts from June 10 to July 1. This piece starts just outside the 3-mile stretch of breakers running out of the land and extends overseas in a usually westerly path to 24 fathoms. Very much hand-lining is completed here. From the shoal drinking water, in April and May, the fish seem to be feeding on the "lant," (Ammodytes americanus). It is said how the minn kota pieces taken on the bottom close to the tropical island are small compared to those located farther to the west. The shoal water of your northern shore of the island is said to obtain good cod grounds and favorite locations for "dory hands-upholster." The cod universities seem to appear on the Upper Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from very same point 28 miles) at the end of March as well as the first of April, shifting N. and W. to the island. The cod of Sable Tropical island are said to be fine, firm minn kota pieces, perhaps due to the abundance of the "reddish colored clams" (bank clams) on these grounds. The cod and haddock fishery is carried on by American and Canadian cruising otter and vessels trawlers, an increasing number of English and French vessels of the latter class performing the fishery of this ground each year. Halibut are found on the Western Lender virtually all the entire year at depths varying using the seasons. As being a halibut financial institution, this, together with the Gully and Quereau--actually, all one piece of terrain--ranks 2nd only to the Grand Lender Itself. The most effective fishing here for halibut is found from January to October. There are several places about and on your budget that the halibut seems to like, as the Optimum of Pike, 85 mls W. by S. in the Northwest Light of Sable Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 kilometers; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in May; thence out into 100 and 150 fathoms in June; in fact, pursuing the 100--fathom curve over the edge of this bank, beyond the Northeast Top (40 miles SE. through the Northeast Lighting), into the Gully and around the Southern Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this piece of underside in July. Often the minn kota parts are close to the isle in the spring, where the water is really shoal that they may be seen using the bait or playing with the hook before you take. InApr and May, and June a good halibut ground is in 18 fathoms 24 mls WNW. from Sable Tropical island. The European Bank seems to be a good giving ground for both cod and halibut mainly because it abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, and also at certain intervals there are many smaller sized species of seafood upon it, for example the lant and herring, on which these varieties and the haddock, also, particularly prey. Plenty of swordfish is taken within August and September, mainly by American vessels. Banquereau. Segregated from the American Bank with the Gully, it has a very unnatural form--the primary bank roughly rectangular, using a narrow westerly extension of comparatively typical form. Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest size about 47 miles, and its total area about 2,800 miles.
  • 5. The main portion of the financial institution lies in between 44? 04' and 45? 01' north latitude and 67? 10' and 59? 00' to the west longitude, and the western prolongation lies in between 44? 24' and 44? 42' north latitude and 69? 00' and 80? 05' western side longitude. North of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine, remote from 2 to 15 miles according to the places that measurements are taken. If any current, the currents here are of various force, significantly influenced by the wind, so that several days of strong tides may be then intervals if you find little. About the eastern part of Quereau is surely an area of shoal ground called the Rocky Underside, having a range of about 18 fathoms; in other places depths operate from 18 to 50 fathoms. You can find scattered areas of yellow sand and gravel, even though typically the bottom is rocky. Cod and halibut are the primary food fish hake, considered and haddock and cusk being consumed small amounts. The Rocky Bottom, a shoal floor of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much resorted to by dory handliners in summer. The cod are most plentiful in the eastern section of the bank, though occasional great fares are taken in the direction of the west. The most effective cod minn kota parts on this bank is from May until September, if the schools gather to feed with the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then very abundant. Halibut are found on this page all the calendar year off the sides in 100 to 400 fathoms. Some of these may be fish in migration northward, however apparently these are generally reproduction and giving grounds for this particular species, in fact it is not uncommon for a university to remain for weeks as well as months in just one locality. The primary halibut grounds are down the southern and eastern borders from the bank--the Southwest Prong and the South west Cove (in approximately 44? N. lat. and between 58? 58 and 30'? 55' W. long), the Middle Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), and also the Eastern Slope (44? 28' to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These strong-h2o areas are rocky and support an incredibly rich expansion ofcorals and gorgonians, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has an abundance of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are excellent hand-line grounds for cod. The halibut, too, rss feeds to a substantial extent after these red clams. The Stone Fencing off the eastern slope of Quereau is an extremely rocky component of ground filled with "bushes" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is an excellent halibut terrain although it is practically impossible to haul the gear by hand and the application of the "gurdy" (a roller turned by way of a crank and fastened to the dory's bow for winding within the trawl) will become necessary. Infrequent fares of halibut are taken on and about the Rocky Underside in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1. The Gully. This is the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western Banking institution. It runs in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, converting somewhat abruptly S. at its eastern end and continuing down between the eastern end of Western Bank and the Southwest Prong of Banquereau. The full length is all about 80 miles, the greatest width about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms over a bottom of gravel, rocks and beach sand and dirt. The rocky and gravelly portions develop several ridges separated by areas of finer materials, except in the eastern section, in which the intervals involving are mostly protected by pebbles and sharp stones. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of different strength, significantly affected by the easterly wind. The Gully is a very significant halibut soil. The halibut are not found in great phone numbers all over the soil, perhaps the best of the minn kota parts getting on the difficult and gravelly ridges and slopes included between the meridians of 69? and 80? western side longitude. This rocky base is full
  • 6. of food, along with the lant and herring tend to be plentiful within their period. In the spring the halibut seem to be especially several in the upper and northwestern elements of the bank, afterwards, in June and July, moving even farther out. Some, are found within winter. Even though the cod is sometimes found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms, it will not are most often of typical occurrence; and apparently you will find almost no haddock here, possibly because of the level of the normal water and the nature of the bottom. Artimon Bank. Has an area of some 120 rectangular miles using a bottom of gravel and rocksdepths and rocks of 38 to 50 fathoms. It is actually but unknown because of the habit of the anglers to use the larger grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present right here, however. The lender lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from it by a thin, deep-water route. Misaine Bank. Lies N. of the traditional western two-thirds of Quereau, at one position very close to, but in standard the banks are separated by some 20 miles of deep water. Its very best length is 80 mls and its very best width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms over a bottom damaged and rocky. A few halibut trips are landed from it in most yrs, even though it is not of much importance as a minn kota parts terrain. Canso Banking institution. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Lender, lying within an E, and W. course; its span is 45 miles and its greatest thickness 13 a long way, its region being about 425 rectangular miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms more than a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. More fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; perhaps it is overshadowed by the inclusion of its larger sized Western, Quereau and neighbors Banks, with which grounds it forms almost one component of bottom, only narrow, deep-h2o channels separating them, even though it is not of great importance and importance being a minn kota pieces ground, especially as evaluated by the use of it by the American citizen fleet. These larger reasons are heavily fished each by American vessels and by those from Nova Scotia ports as well as by French and English language otter trawlers. The figures given elsewhere and here in this particular report are taken from the published bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include only the landings of vessels of 5 tons net, or older, at the plug-ins of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me. [Table 5--Sport fishing grounds in the offshore North Atlantic, exhibiting the principal kinds taken upon them] [Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) made a map in 1505 demonstrating Sable Island, dreaded and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, where he named it "Santa Cruz."
