Overview of the Bahá‘í Faith

The Bah{’í Faith is the newest of the world Among the most fundamental of Bah{’u’ll{h’s

                                                   Bahá’í Central Figures

The century under our review may therefore be considered as falling into four distinct periods, of
unequal duration, each of specific import and of tremendous and indeed unappraisable significance.
These four periods are closely interrelated, and constitute successive acts of one, indivisible, stupendous
and sublime drama, whose mystery no intellect can fathom, whose climax no eye can even dimly
perceive, whose conclusion no mind can adequately foreshadow….
The first period (1844-1852), centers around the gentle, the youthful and irresistible person of The Báb,
matchless in His meekness, imperturbable in His serenity, magnetic in His utterance, unrivaled in the
dramatic episodes of His swift and tragic ministry….
The second period (1852-1892) derives its inspiration from the august figure of Bahá‘u‘lláh, preeminent
in holiness, awesome in the majesty of His strength and power, unapproachable in the transcendent
              brightness of His glory….
The third period (1892-1921) revolves around the vibrant personality of ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá, mysterious in His
essence, unique in His station, astoundingly potent in both the charm and strength of His character….
The fourth period (1921-1944) is motivated by the forces radiating from the Will and Testament of
‗Abdu‘l-Bahá, that Charter of Bahá‘u‘lláh's New World Order, the offspring resulting from the mystic
intercourse between Him Who is the Source of the Law of God and the mind of the One Who is the
vehicle and interpreter of that Law.

Who is Bahá‘u‘lláh?

Bah{’ís believe that Bah{’u’ll{h is the Messenger of God for this
day. His teachings are the basis of the Bah{’í Faith, whose primary
aim is the unity of mankind.

Born in 1817, Bah{’u’ll{h was a member of one of the great
patrician families of Persia. The family could trace its lineage to the
ruling dynasties of Persia's imperial past, and was endowed with
wealth and vast estates. Turning His back on the position at court
which these advantages offered Him, Bah{’u’ll{h became known
for His generosity and kindliness which made Him deeply loved
                                               among His countrymen.

Engulfed in the waves of violence unleashed upon the Bábis after
the Báb's execution Bah{’u’ll{h suffered not only the loss of all His
worldly endowments but was subjected to imprisonment, torture,
and a series of banishments. The first was to Baghdad where, in
1863, He announced Himself as the One promised by the Báb. From
Baghdad, Bah{’u’ll{h was sent to Constantinople, to Adrianople,

and finally to Acre, in the Holy Land, where He arrived as a
                     Bahji, Palestine
prisoner in 1868. He stayed a prisoner until his passing.

Bah{’u’ll{h passed away in 1892 at Bahji, just north of Acre, and is
buried there. His message has spread to every country on earth. His
Shrine is today the focal point of the Bah{’í world.

Who is ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá?

                                       ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (1844-1921)

From earliest childhood, Abbas Effendi, the eldest son of Bah{’u’ll{h,
shared His father's sufferings and banishments. He took as His title
‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the "servant of Bahá." Bah{’u’ll{h appointed Him the
one authorized interpreter of the Bah{’í teachings and as Head of the
               Faith after His own passing.

In ‘Abdu’l-Bah{ was seen a perfect example of the Bah{’í way of life.
While ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was still a prisoner of the Ottomans the first
Bah{’í pilgrims from the western world arrived in Acre in 1898.

After His release in 1908, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá set out on a series of journeys
which, in 1911-1913, took Him to Europe and America. There He
proclaimed Bah{’u’ll{h's message of unity and social justice to church
congregations, peace societies, the members of trade unions, university
faculties, journalists, government officials, and many public audiences.
‘Abdu’l-Bahá passed away in 1921, having consolidated the
foundations of the Bah{’í Faith and greatly expanded its reach. The
northern rooms of the Shrine of the Báb, where He is interred, are a
place of pilgrimage for Bah{’ís visiting the World Center of their Faith.

Who is Shoghi Effendi?

Shoghí Effendí Rabbání (March 1, 1897 - November 4, 1957), better known as Shoghi
Effendi, was the Guardian of the Bah{’í Faith from 1921 until his death in 1957.
After the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Bah{ in 1921, the leadership of the Bah{’í community
entered a new phase, evolving from that of a single individual to an administrative
order founded on the "twin pillars" of the Guardianship and the Universal House of
Justice, being the executive and legislative branches.
Shoghi Effendi is not regarded as one of the Central Figures of the Bah{’í Faith.
Whereas the works of the three Central Figures constitute the source of the Bah{’í
Faith, Shoghi Effendi's writings are commentaries on the works of the Báb,
                                             Bah{’u’ll{h and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.

For thirty-six years Shoghi Effendi developed the worldwide Bah{’í community and

its administrative structure. Because the Bah{’í community was relatively small and
undeveloped when he assumed the leadership of the Faith, he strengthened and
developed it over many years to the point where it was capable of supporting the
administrative structure envisioned by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. Under Shoghi Effendi's
direction, National Spiritual Assemblies were formed, and many thousands of Local
Spiritual Assemblies sprang up as the Bah{’í Faith spread around the globe.

He also appointed 32 living Hands of the Cause (bringing it to a total of 50), oversaw
the completion of the superstructure of the Shrine of the Báb, appointed the
International Bah{’í Council in 1951, launched the Ten Year Crusade in 1953, and
acted as the official representative of the Faith to legal authorities in Palestine/Israel
throughout many attempts by Covenant-breakers to take authority from him.
National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá‘ís of the U.S., dated 2000:

Does Bahá‘u‘lláh declare that He represents God to mankind?

In mine hand I carry the testimony of God, your Lord and the Lord
of your sires of old. Weigh it with the just Balance that ye possess,
the Balance of the testimony of the Prophets and Messengers of God.
If ye find it to be established in truth, if ye believe it to be of God,
beware, then, lest ye cavil at it, and render your works vain<.

What is the mission of Bahá‘u‘lláh?

The essence of Bahá'u'lláh's World Order is the unity of the human race.
'O ye children of men', He writes, 'the fundamental purpose animating the Faith
of God and His Religion is to safeguard the interests and promote the unity of the
human race...' And He warns, 'The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are
unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.' The achievement of
this unity is Bahá'u'lláh's declared mission and the aim of all Bahá'í activity.

The Dawn of a New Day

This is the Day in which God's most excellent favors have been poured out
upon men, the Day in which His most mighty grace hath been infused into
all created things. It is incumbent upon all the peoples of the world to
reconcile their differences, and, with perfect unity and peace, abide beneath
the shadow of the Tree of His care and loving-kindness.

How does Bahá‘u‘lláh describe the awakening of His revelation?

When We entered the prison, on arrival, they conducted us along a
dismal corridor, and thence We descended three steep stairs to the
dungeon appointed for Us. The place was dark, and its inmates
numbered nearly a hundred and fifty – thieves, assassins, and
highway robbers. Holding such a crowd as this, it yet had no outlet
but the passage through which We entered. The pen fails to describe
this place and its putrid stench. Most of the company had neither
clothes to wear nor mat to lie on. God knows what We endured in that
gloomy and loathsome place! By day and by night, in this prison We
reflected on the condition of the Bábís and their doings and affairs,
wondering how, notwithstanding their greatness of soul, nobility, and
intelligence, they could be capable of such a deed as this audacious
attempt on the life of the sovereign. Then did this wronged One
determine that, on leaving this prison, He would arise with the utmost
endeavor for the regeneration of these souls. One night, in a dream,
this all-glorious word was heard from all sides: ‚Verily We will aid

A short summary of the life of Bahá‘u‘lláh

"The face of him on whom I gazed I can never forget, though I cannot describe it. Those
piercing eyes seemed to read one's very soul; power and authority sat on that ample brow<.
No need to ask in whose presence I stood, as I bowed myself before one who is the object of a
devotion and love which kings might envy and emperors sigh for in vain!‚
Bah{’u’ll{h was thus described by the well-known Cambridge University Orientalist Edward
Granville Browne in 1890. Bah{’u’ll{h had, at that time, been a prisoner and an exile for
almost 40 years<; today He is recognized by millions of followers around the world as the
Manifestation of God or Divine Teacher for this age<.
Bah{’u’ll{h's central message for humanity in this day is one of unity and justice<.
Born into a noble family in nineteenth century Persia, Bah{’u’ll{h's destiny would seem to
have been one of wealth and ease. Yet, from an early age He showed little interest in
following in His father's footsteps at the Shah's court, preferring to spend His time and
resources in ministering to the poor. Later, His recognition of the religion of The Báb , which
arose in 1844 in Persia and was destined to fulfill the prophecies of Islam, caused Him to be
cast into prison and subsequently exiled<.
Throughout the long years of exile He endured, Bah{’u’ll{h revealed divinely inspired
passages equivalent to over 100 volumes. This revelation comprises mystical writings, social
and ethical teachings, laws and ordinances, and a fearless proclamation of His message to the
kings and rulers of the world, including Napoleon III, Queen Victoria, Pope Pius IX, the Shah
of Persia, Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, and others<.
Bah{’u’ll{h passed from this earthly world in 1892, still nominally a prisoner in Palestine.

Why did Bahá‘u‘lláh suffer for mankind?

At last, in this greatest prison, His holy body was extremely weakened from the intense
sufferings and His beautiful person became as weak as a web from this continual hardship.
His main purpose in bearing this heavy burden and all these troubles which gave forth their
waves like an ocean, accepting the chains and fetters and showing forth the great forbearance,
was for the sake of harmony, concord and union among all the people of the world and for
the establishment of the signs of the real unity among all nations, until the essential Unity (of
God) might (at last) appear in the existing realities, and the light of the saying: "Thou seest
no difference among the creatures of God" might shine forth upon the whole world.

Does Bahá‘u‘lláh have knowledge of the inner reality of God?

I swear by Thy Beauty, O King of Eternity Who sittest on Thy most glorious
Throne! He (Bah{’u’ll{h) Who is the Day Spring of Thy signs and the
Revealer of Thy clear tokens hath, notwithstanding the immensity of His
wisdom and the loftiness of His knowledge, confessed His powerlessness
to comprehend the least of Thine utterances, in their relation to Thy most
exalted Pen how much more is He incapable of apprehending the nature of

Why do Bahá‘ís believe that Bahá‘u‘lláh is a return of Christ?

                                               …the light of
                                               this evening is
                                                 the light of
                                                last evening
                                                  relighted.

Jesus Christ, speaking of John the Baptist, declared he was Elias. When John the
Baptist was questioned, "Art thou Elias?" he said, "I am not." These two statements
are apparently contradictory, but in reality they do not contradict. The light is one
light. The light which illumined this lamp last night is illuminating it tonight.
This does not mean that the identical rays of light have reappeared but the virtues
of illumination. The light which revealed itself through the glass reveals itself
again so that we can say the light of this evening is the light of last evening
relighted. This is as regards its virtues<. We believe in that which Jesus Christ
and all the Prophets have believed.

Having failed to recognize Bahá‘u‘lláh in this day…

If, in the Day when all the peoples of the earth will be gathered together,
any man should, whilst standing in the presence of God, be asked:
"Wherefore hast thou disbelieved in My Beauty and turned away from
My Self," and if such a man should reply and say: "Inasmuch as all men
have erred, and none hath been found willing to turn his face to the
Truth, I, too, following their example, have grievously failed to recognize
the Beauty of the Eternal," such a plea will, assuredly, be rejected. For the
faith of no man can be conditioned by any one except himself.

Be assured in thyself that verily, he who turns away from this Beauty

Rejection of the Manifestation in this Day

It is certainly a much greater responsibility to reject the Manifestation in Their day
than it was in the past dispensations, inasmuch as man, and indeed humanity as a
whole, have been endowed with a greater measure of spiritual receptivity than ever
before, and consequently it would be a much graver sin to repudiate the revealed
Truth now than it would have been the case in by-gone ages and centuries.

Why do we need Prophets and Messengers?

Holy Manifestations of God are the centers of the light of reality, of the source
of mysteries, and of the bounties of love. They are resplendent in the world
               of hearts and thoughts, and shower eternal graces upon the world of spirits;
they give spiritual life and are shining with the light of realities and
meanings. The enlightenment of the world of thought comes from these
centers of light and sources of mysteries. Without the bounty of the splendor
and the instructions of these Holy Beings the world of souls and thoughts
               would be opaque darkness<

What are the three stations of the Prophets of God?

The first station is the physical; the second station is the
human, which is that of the rational soul; the third is that
of the divine appearance and the heavenly splendor.

A station that cannot be described or alluded to

Indeed He was a hidden treasure. This is a station that can never be described
nor even alluded to. And in the station of 'I did wish to make Myself known',
God was, and His creation had ever existed beneath His shelter from the
beginning that hath no beginning, apart from its being preceded by a
Firstness which cannot be regarded as firstness and originated by a Cause
inscrutable even unto all men of learning.

The hour at which the supreme Manifestation of God revealeth Himself

Consider the hour at which the supreme Manifestation of God revealeth Himself
unto men. Ere that hour cometh, the Ancient Being, Who is still unknown of men
and hath not as yet given utterance to the Word of God, is Himself the All-Knower
in a world devoid of any man that hath known Him.

He is indeed the Creator without a creation. For at the very moment preceding His
Revelation, each and every created thing shall be made to yield up its soul to God.

This is indeed the Day of which it hath been written: "Whose shall be the
Kingdom this Day?" And none can be found ready to answer!

                                                     Bahá‘u‘lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 151

Ere the expiration of a thousand years…

Whoso layeth claim to a Revelation direct from God, ere the expiration of a full thousand
years, such a man is assuredly a lying imposter. We pray God that He may graciously
assist him to retract and repudiate such claim. Should he repent, God will, no doubt,
forgive him. If, however, he persisteth in his error, God will, assuredly, send down one
who will deal mercilessly with him. Terrible, indeed, is God in punishing! Whosoever
interpreteth this verse otherwise than its obvious meaning is deprived of the Spirit of God
and of His mercy which encompasseth all created things. Fear God, and follow not your
idle fancies. Nay, rather follow the bidding of your Lord, the Almighty, the All-Wise.

Bahá‘u‘lláh, The Most Holy Book, ¶37

What happened in the world of knowledge
since the Revelations of the Báb and Bahá‘u‘lláh?

Now consider, in this great century which is the cycle of Bah{’u’ll{h, what
progress science and knowledge have made, how many secrets of existence
have been discovered, how many great inventions have been brought to light
and are day by day multiplying in number. Before long, material science and
learning, as well as the knowledge of God, will make such progress and will
show forth such wonders that the beholders will be amazed. Then the mystery
of this verse in Isaiah, ‚For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the
               Lord,‛ will be completely evident.

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to the world‘s elected representatives?

O YE the elected representatives of the people in every land! Take ye counsel together,
and let your concern be only for that which profiteth mankind, and bettereth the
condition thereof, if ye be of them that scan heedfully. Regard the world as the human
body which, though at its creation whole and perfect, hath been afflicted, through
various causes, with grave disorders and maladies<.

That which the Lord hath ordained as the sovereign remedy and mightiest instrument
for the healing of all the world is the union of all its peoples in one universal Cause,
one common Faith. This can in no wise be achieved except through the power of a
skilled, an all-powerful and inspired Physician. This, verily, is the truth, and all else

How did Bahá‘u‘lláh address Great Britain‘s Queen Victoria?

O QUEEN in London! Incline thine ear unto the voice of thy Lord,
the Lord of all mankind<. He, in truth, hath come unto the world in
His most great glory, and all that hath been mentioned in the Gospel
                             hath been fulfilled<.

Lay aside thy desire, and set then thine heart towards thy Lord, the
Ancient of Days. We make mention of thee for the sake of God, and
desire that thy name may be exalted through thy remembrance of
God, the Creator of earth and heaven<. We have been informed
that thou hast forbidden the trading in slaves, both men and women.
This, verily, is what God hath enjoined in this wondrous Revelation.
God hath, truly, destined a reward for thee, because of this.<
We have also heard that thou hast entrusted the reins of counsel into
the hands of the representatives of the people. Thou, indeed, hast
done well, for thereby the foundations of the edifice of thine affairs
will be strengthened, and the hearts of all that are beneath thy
shadow, whether high or low, will be tranquillized<.

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to Pope Pius IX?

O Pope! Rend the veils asunder. He Who is the Lord of
Lords is come overshadowed with clouds, and the decree
hath been fulfilled by God, the Almighty, the
Unrestrained<. He, verily, hath again come down from
Heaven even as He came down from it the first time. Beware
that thou dispute not with Him even as the Pharisees
disputed with Him (Jesus) without a clear token or proof.
On His right hand flow the living waters of grace, and on
His left the choice Wine of justice, whilst before Him march
the angels of Paradise, bearing the banners of His signs.
Beware lest any name debar thee from God, the Creator of
earth and heaven. Leave thou the world behind thee, and
turn towards thy Lord, through Whom the whole earth hath
been illumined<Arise in the name of thy Lord, the God of
Mercy, amidst the peoples of the earth, and seize thou the
Cup of Life with the hands of confidence, and first drink
thou therefrom, and proffer it then to such as turn towards it
amongst the peoples of all faiths<.

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to the world‘s religious leaders?

O leaders of religion! Weigh not the Book of God with
such standards and sciences as are current amongst you,
for the Book itself is the unerring balance established
amongst men. In this most perfect balance whatsoever
the peoples and kindreds of the earth possess must be
weighed, while the measure of its weight should be
tested according to its own standard, did ye but know
                       it<.
O ye leaders of religion! Who is the man amongst you
that can rival Me in vision or insight? Where is he to be
found that dareth to claim to be My equal in utterance
or wisdom? No, by My Lord, the All-Merciful! All on
the earth shall pass away; and this is the face of your
                       Lord, the Almighty, the Well-Beloved.
O concourse of divines! When My verses were sent
down, and My clear tokens were revealed, We found
                       you behind the veils.
Those divines<who are truly adorned with the
ornament of knowledge and of a goodly character are,
verily, as a head to the body of the world, and as eyes to
the nations. The guidance of men hath, at all times,
been and is dependent upon these blessed souls.

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to the French Emperor Napoleon III?

O KING of Paris! Tell the priest to ring the bells no longer. By
God, the True One! The Most Mighty Bell hath appeared in the
form of Him Who is the Most Great Name, and the fingers of the
will of Thy Lord, the Most Exalted, the Most High, toll it out in
the heaven of Immortality, in His name, the All-Glorious<. Say:
He Who is the Unconditioned is come, in the clouds of light<
O King! We heard the words thou didst utter in answer to the
Czar of Russia, concerning the decision made regarding the war
(Crimean War)<. Thou didst say: 'I lay asleep upon my couch,
when the cry of the oppressed, who were drowned in the Black
Sea, wakened me.‘<. We testify that that which wakened thee
was not their cry but the promptings of thine own passions<.
For what thou hast done, thy kingdom shall be thrown into
confusion, and thine empire shall pass from thine hands, as a
punishment for that which thou hast wrought<. Hath thy pomp
made thee proud? By My Life! It shall not endure; nay, it shall

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to Austria‘s Emperor Francis Joseph?

O EMPEROR of Austria! He who is the Dayspring of God's
Light dwelt in the prison of 'Akká, at the time when thou
didst set forth to visit the Aqsa Mosque (Jerusalem). Thou
passed Him by, and inquired not about Him, by Whom
every house is exalted, and every lofty gate unlocked.

We, verily, made it (Jerusalem) a place whereunto the world
should turn, that they might remember Me, and yet thou
hast rejected Him Who is the object of this remembrance,
when He appeared with the Kingdom of God, thy Lord and
the Lord of the worlds. We have been with thee at all times,
and found thee clinging unto the Branch and heedless of the
Root. Thy Lord, verily, is a witness unto what I say. We
grieved to see thee circle round Our Name, whilst unaware
of Us, though We were before thy face<.

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to Iran‘s Nasiri‗d-Din Shah?

O KING! I was but a man like others, asleep upon My couch, when lo, the
breezes of the All-Glorious were wafted over Me, and taught Me the
knowledge of all that hath been. This thing is not from Me, but from One Who
is Almighty and All-Knowing. And He bade Me lift up My voice between earth
and heaven, and for this there befell Me what hath caused the tears of every
                         man of understanding to flow<.

Can any one speak forth of his own accord that for which all men, both high
and low, will protest against him? Nay, by Him Who taught the Pen the eternal
mysteries, save him whom the grace of the Almighty, the All-Powerful, hath
                         strengthened<.

I have seen, O Shah, in the path of God what eye hath not seen nor ear heard<
How numerous the tribulations which have rained, and will soon rain, upon
                         Me<
By God! Though weariness lay Me low, and hunger consume Me, and the bare
rock be My bed, and My fellows the beasts of the field, I will not complain, but
will endure patiently as those endued with constancy and firmness have
endured patiently, through the power of God, the Eternal King and Creator of
the nations, and will render thanks unto God under all conditions. We pray
that, out of His bounty -- exalted be He -- He may release, through this
imprisonment, the necks of men from chains and fetters, and cause them to
turn, with sincere faces, towards His Face, Who is the Mighty, the Bounteous.
Ready is He to answer whosoever calleth upon Him, and nigh is He unto such
                         as commune with Him.
                                                                  Bahá‘u‘lláh, The Proclamation of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 54

What did Bahá‘u‘lláh write to Russia‘s Czar Alexander II?

O CZAR of Russia! Incline thine ear unto the voice of God, the King, the Holy, and turn thou unto
Paradise,<' He Who is the Father is come, and the Son (Jesus), in the holy vale, crieth out: 'Here
am I, here am I, O Lord, My God!' whilst Sinai circleth round the House, and the Burning Bush
calleth aloud: 'The All-Bounteous is come mounted upon the clouds! Blessed is he that draweth
nigh unto Him, and woe betide them that are far away.'
Arise thou amongst men in the name of this all-compelling Cause, and summon, then, the nations
unto God, the Exalted, the Great. Be thou not of them who called upon God by one of His names,
but who, when He Who is the Object of all names appeared, denied Him and turned aside from
Him, and, in the end, pronounced sentence against Him with manifest injustice<.
I am the One Whom the tongue of Isaiah hath extolled, the One with Whose name both the Torah
and the Evangel were adorned<. Blessed be the king whose sovereignty hath withheld him not
from his Sovereign, and who hath turned unto God with his heart<.

The destiny of Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel was extolled by the prophet Isaiah almost three thousand years ago, when he
announced that "it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be
established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall
flow unto it." Now, with the coming of the Lord of Hosts, His devoted servants throughout the world
have been summoned to the momentous undertaking with which the fulfillment of this ancient
promise is associated. As they dedicate themselves to this mighty task, let them draw inspiration
from these Words of Bah{’u’ll{h: "Carmel, in the Book of God, hath been designated as the Hill of
God, and His Vineyard. It is here that, by the grace of the Lord of Revelation, the Tabernacle of Glory
hath been raised. Happy are they that attain thereunto; happy they that set their faces towards it.‚

The Tablet of Carmel

Call out to Zion, O Carmel, and announce the joyful tidings: He that
was hidden from mortal eyes is come! His all-conquering sovereignty
is manifest; His all-encompassing splendor is revealed. Beware lest
thou hesitate or halt. Hasten forth and circumambulate the City of
God that hath descended from heaven<., the pure in heart, and the
company of the most exalted angels. Oh, how I long to announce unto
every spot on the surface of the earth, and to carry to each one of its
cities, the glad-tidings of this Revelation -- a Revelation to which the
heart of Sinai hath been attracted, and in whose name the Burning
Bush is calling: "Unto God, the Lord of Lords, belong the kingdoms of
earth and heaven." Verily this is the Day in which both land and sea
rejoice at this announcement, the Day for which have been laid up
those things which God, through a bounty beyond the ken of mortal
mind or heart, hath destined for revelation. Ere long will God sail His
Ark upon thee, and will manifest the people of Bahá who have been
mentioned in the Book of Names.

Sanctified be the Lord of all mankind, at the mention of Whose name
all the atoms of the earth have been made to vibrate, and the Tongue
of Grandeur hath been moved to disclose that which had been wrapt
in His knowledge and lay concealed within the treasury of His might.
He, verily, through the potency of His name, the Mighty, the All-
Powerful, the Most High, is the ruler of all that is in the heavens and
                all that is on earth.

On May 23, 1844, in Shiraz, Persia, a young man known as the Báb
announced the imminent appearance of the Messenger of God awaited by
all the peoples of the world. The title Báb means "the Gate." Although
Himself the bearer of an independent revelation from God, the Báb
declared that His purpose was to prepare mankind for this advent.
Swift and savage persecution at the hands of the dominant Muslim clergy
followed this announcement. The Báb was arrested, beaten, imprisoned,

Tabriz. Some 20,000 of His followers perished in a series of massacres
throughout Persia. Today, the majestic building with the golden dome,
overlooking the Bay of Haifa, Israel, and set amidst beautiful gardens, is

Who was ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá?

‘Abdu’l-Bahá—by word and example--proclaimed with persuasiveness and force
the essential principles of His Father's religion. Affirming that "Love is the most
great law" that is the foundation of "true civilization," and that the "supreme need

reached out to leaders and the meek alike, to every soul who crossed His path<.
Bah{’u’ll{h's appointment of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as His successor was the means for
diffusing His message of hope and universal peace to all corners of the world, for
realizing the essential unity of all peoples. In referring to ‘Abdu’l-Bah{, Bah{’u’ll{h
wrote: "The glory of God rest upon Thee, and upon whosoever serveth Thee and
circleth around Thee. Woe, great woe, betide him that opposeth and injureth Thee.
Well is it with him that sweareth fealty to Thee." ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was, in short, the
Center of Bah{’u’ll{h's Covenant—the instrument for ensuring the unity of the
Bah{’í community and preserving the integrity of Bah{’u’ll{h's teachings.
As the authorized interpreter of Bah{’u’ll{h's teachings, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá became the
"living mouth of the Book, the expounder of the Word." Without ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the
enormous creative power of Bah{’u’ll{h's revelation could not have been
transmitted to humanity, nor its import fully comprehended. He elucidated the
teachings of His Father's Faith, amplified its doctrines, and delineated the central

                                                        of a rapidly expanding Bah{’í community<.

Seldom have I seen one whose appearance impressed me more. A tall strongly-built man
holding himself straight as an arrow, with white turban and raiment, long black locks
reaching almost to the shoulder, broad powerful forehead indicating a strong intellect
combined with an unswerving will, eyes keen as a hawk's, and strongly-marked but
pleasing features--such was my first impression of `Abbas Effendi, 'the master' as he par

and the Muhammadans, could, I should think, scarcely be found even amongst the
eloquent, ready, and subtle race to which he belongs. These qualities, combined with a
bearing at once majestic and genial, made me cease to wonder at the influence and esteem
which he enjoyed even beyond the circle of his father's followers. About the greatness of
this man and his power no one who had seen him could entertain a doubt.

A day in the life of ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá

These people are ranged against the walls or seated on the ground, apparently in an
attitude of expectation; for what do they wait? Let us wait with them. We have not long to
wait. A door opens and a man comes out. He is of middle stature, strongly built. He wears
flowing light-colored robes. On his head is a light buff fez with a white cloth wound about
it. He is perhaps sixty years of age. His long grey hair rests on his shoulders. His forehead
is broad, full, and high, his nose slightly aquiline, his moustaches and beard, the latter full
though not heavy, nearly white. His eyes are grey and blue, large, and both soft and
penetrating. His bearing is simple, but there is grace, dignity, and even majesty about his
movements. He passes through the crowd, and as he goes utters words of salutation. We do
not understand them, but we see the benignity and the kindliness of his countenance. He
stations himself at a narrow angle of the street and motions to the people to come towards
him. They crowd up a little too insistently. He pushes them gently back and lets them pass
him one by one. As they come they hold their hands extended. In each open palm he places
some small coins. He knows them all. He caresses them with his hand on the face, on the
shoulders, on the head. Some he stops and questions. An aged negro who hobbles up, he
greets with some kindly inquiry; the old man's broad face breaks into a sunny smile, his
white teeth glistening against his ebony skin as he replies. He stops a woman with a babe
and fondly strokes the child. As they pass, some kiss his hand. To all he says, ‚Marhabbah,
marhabbah‛ – Well done, well done!
So they all pass him. The children have been crowding around him with extended hands,
but to them he has not given. However, at the end, as he turns to go, he throws a handful of
coppers over his shoulder, for which they scramble<.

Who was the Guardian of the Bahá‘í Faith?

‘Abdu’l-Bahá in His Will and Testament appointed
His grandson, Shoghi Effendi Rabbani, Guardian of
the Bah{’í Faith and interpreter of its teachings.
Shoghi Effendi served until his death in 1957.
During these thirty-six years the Guardian
translated many of the writings of Bah{’u’ll{h and
                                    ‘Abdu’l-Bahá into English, expounded their
meanings, encouraged the establishment of local
and national Bah{’í institutions, and guided a series
of plans aimed at diffusing Bah{’í ideals throughout
the world. In the Holy Land, the Guardian's
enduring memorial is the magnificent setting he
created for the World Center of the Bah{’í Faith. The
completion of the Shrine of the Báb was his work as
was the construction of the International Bah{’í
Archives building. It was also Shoghi Effendi who
designed and laid out the beautiful gardens at Bahji
and on the slopes of Mount Carmel.

During the whole thirty-six years of his Guardianship Shoghi Effendi functioned without
the Universal House of Justice. Now the Universal House of Justice must function
without the Guardian, but the principle of inseparability remains. The Guardianship
does not lose its significance nor position in the Order of Bah{’u’ll{h merely because
               there is no living Guardian.

<these two institutions are, in Shoghi Effendi's words, "complementary in their aim and
purpose. Their common, their fundamental object is to ensure the continuity of that
divinely appointed authority which flows from the Source of our Faith, to safeguard the
unity of its followers, and to maintain the integrity and flexibility of its teachings."

The Universal House of Justice, 1966 May 27: Lights of Guidance, p. 313

What is the Universal House of Justice?

In His Tablet of Carmel, Bah{’u’ll{h announces "Ere long will God sail His Ark upon thee,
and will manifest the people of Bahá who have been mentioned in the Book of Names."
With these words He has called into being the Universal House of Justice, the Supreme
Institution of the Bah{’í Faith, with its Seat on Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel<.

The Guardian has in his writings specified for the House of Justice such fundamental
functions as the formulation of future worldwide teaching plans, the conduct of the
administrative affairs of the Faith, and the guidance, organization, and unification of the
affairs of the Cause throughout the world.

The Univeral House of Justice, Messenges from the Univeral House of Justice, p. 89

O My beloved friends! You are the bearers of the name of God in this Day. You have been chosen as the
repositories of His mystery. It behoves each one of you to manifest the attributes of God, and to exemplify
by your deeds and words the signs of His righteousness, His power and glory. The very members of your
body must bear witness to the loftiness of your purpose, the integrity of your life, the reality of your faith,
and the exalted character of your devotion<. O My Letters! Verily I say, immensely exalted is this Day
above the days of the Apostles of old. Nay, immeasurable is the difference! You are the witnesses of the
Dawn of the promised Day of God. You are the partakers of the mystic chalice of His Revelation. Gird up
the loins of endeavor, and be mindful of the words of God as revealed in His Book: ‘Lo, the Lord thy God
is come, and with Him is the company of His angels arrayed before Him!’ Purge your hearts of worldly
desires, and let angelic virtues be your adorning.< The days when idle worship was deemed sufficient
are ended. The time is come when naught but the purest motive, supported by deeds of stainless purity,
can ascend to the throne of the Most High and be acceptable unto Him.

The Báb, quoted by Nabíl-i-A`ẓam in Nabil's Narrative, translated and edited by Shoghi Effendi, The Dawn-Breakers, p.92

  • 5. Heart to Heart Bahá’í Central Figures The century under our review may therefore be considered as falling into four distinct periods, of unequal duration, each of specific import and of tremendous and indeed unappraisable significance. These four periods are closely interrelated, and constitute successive acts of one, indivisible, stupendous and sublime drama, whose mystery no intellect can fathom, whose climax no eye can even dimly perceive, whose conclusion no mind can adequately foreshadow…. The first period (1844-1852), centers around the gentle, the youthful and irresistible person of The Báb, matchless in His meekness, imperturbable in His serenity, magnetic in His utterance, unrivaled in the dramatic episodes of His swift and tragic ministry…. The second period (1852-1892) derives its inspiration from the august figure of Bahá‘u‘lláh, preeminent in holiness, awesome in the majesty of His strength and power, unapproachable in the transcendent brightness of His glory…. The third period (1892-1921) revolves around the vibrant personality of ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá, mysterious in His essence, unique in His station, astoundingly potent in both the charm and strength of His character…. The fourth period (1921-1944) is motivated by the forces radiating from the Will and Testament of ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá, that Charter of Bahá‘u‘lláh's New World Order, the offspring resulting from the mystic intercourse between Him Who is the Source of the Law of God and the mind of the One Who is the vehicle and interpreter of that Law. • 8. Who is the Báb? The Báb (1819-1850) On May 23, 1844, in Shiraz, Persia, a young man known as the Báb announced the imminent appearance of the Messenger of God awaited by all the peoples of the world. The title Báb means "the Gate." Although Himself the bearer of an independent revelation from God, the Báb declared that His purpose was to prepare mankind for this advent. Swift and savage persecution at the hands of the dominant Muslim clergy followed this announcement. The Báb was arrested, beaten, imprisoned, and finally on July 9, 1850 was executed in the public square of the city of Tabriz. Some 20,000 of His followers perished in a series of massacres The Shrine of the Báb, Mount Carmel, Haifa, Israel. throughout Persia. Today, the majestic building with the golden dome, overlooking the Bay of Haifa, Israel, and set amidst beautiful gardens, is the Shrine where the Báb's earthly remains are entombed. • 9. Who is Bahá‘u‘lláh? Bah{’ís believe that Bah{’u’ll{h is the Messenger of God for this day. His teachings are the basis of the Bah{’í Faith, whose primary aim is the unity of mankind. Born in 1817, Bah{’u’ll{h was a member of one of the great patrician families of Persia. The family could trace its lineage to the ruling dynasties of Persia's imperial past, and was endowed with wealth and vast estates. Turning His back on the position at court which these advantages offered Him, Bah{’u’ll{h became known for His generosity and kindliness which made Him deeply loved among His countrymen. Engulfed in the waves of violence unleashed upon the Bábis after the Báb's execution Bah{’u’ll{h suffered not only the loss of all His worldly endowments but was subjected to imprisonment, torture, and a series of banishments. The first was to Baghdad where, in 1863, He announced Himself as the One promised by the Báb. From Baghdad, Bah{’u’ll{h was sent to Constantinople, to Adrianople, The Shrine of the Bahá’u’lláh and finally to Acre, in the Holy Land, where He arrived as a Bahji, Palestine prisoner in 1868. He stayed a prisoner until his passing. Bah{’u’ll{h passed away in 1892 at Bahji, just north of Acre, and is buried there. His message has spread to every country on earth. His Shrine is today the focal point of the Bah{’í world. • 10. Who is ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá? ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (1844-1921) From earliest childhood, Abbas Effendi, the eldest son of Bah{’u’ll{h, shared His father's sufferings and banishments. He took as His title ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the "servant of Bahá." Bah{’u’ll{h appointed Him the one authorized interpreter of the Bah{’í teachings and as Head of the Faith after His own passing. In ‘Abdu’l-Bah{ was seen a perfect example of the Bah{’í way of life. While ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was still a prisoner of the Ottomans the first Bah{’í pilgrims from the western world arrived in Acre in 1898. After His release in 1908, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá set out on a series of journeys which, in 1911-1913, took Him to Europe and America. There He proclaimed Bah{’u’ll{h's message of unity and social justice to church congregations, peace societies, the members of trade unions, university faculties, journalists, government officials, and many public audiences. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá passed away in 1921, having consolidated the foundations of the Bah{’í Faith and greatly expanded its reach. The northern rooms of the Shrine of the Báb, where He is interred, are a place of pilgrimage for Bah{’ís visiting the World Center of their Faith. • 11. Who is Shoghi Effendi? Shoghí Effendí Rabbání (March 1, 1897 - November 4, 1957), better known as Shoghi Effendi, was the Guardian of the Bah{’í Faith from 1921 until his death in 1957. After the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Bah{ in 1921, the leadership of the Bah{’í community entered a new phase, evolving from that of a single individual to an administrative order founded on the "twin pillars" of the Guardianship and the Universal House of Justice, being the executive and legislative branches. Shoghi Effendi is not regarded as one of the Central Figures of the Bah{’í Faith. Whereas the works of the three Central Figures constitute the source of the Bah{’í Faith, Shoghi Effendi's writings are commentaries on the works of the Báb, Bah{’u’ll{h and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. For thirty-six years Shoghi Effendi developed the worldwide Bah{’í community and © Bahá'í International Community its administrative structure. Because the Bah{’í community was relatively small and undeveloped when he assumed the leadership of the Faith, he strengthened and developed it over many years to the point where it was capable of supporting the administrative structure envisioned by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. Under Shoghi Effendi's direction, National Spiritual Assemblies were formed, and many thousands of Local Spiritual Assemblies sprang up as the Bah{’í Faith spread around the globe. He also appointed 32 living Hands of the Cause (bringing it to a total of 50), oversaw the completion of the superstructure of the Shrine of the Báb, appointed the International Bah{’í Council in 1951, launched the Ten Year Crusade in 1953, and acted as the official representative of the Faith to legal authorities in Palestine/Israel throughout many attempts by Covenant-breakers to take authority from him. • 12. Does Bahá‘u‘lláh declare that He represents God to mankind? In mine hand I carry the testimony of God, your Lord and the Lord of your sires of old. Weigh it with the just Balance that ye possess, the Balance of the testimony of the Prophets and Messengers of God. If ye find it to be established in truth, if ye believe it to be of God, beware, then, lest ye cavil at it, and render your works vain<. • 13. What is the mission of Bahá‘u‘lláh? The essence of Bahá'u'lláh's World Order is the unity of the human race. 'O ye children of men', He writes, 'the fundamental purpose animating the Faith of God and His Religion is to safeguard the interests and promote the unity of the human race...' And He warns, 'The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.' The achievement of this unity is Bahá'u'lláh's declared mission and the aim of all Bahá'í activity. A quote from the Foreword by the Universal House of Justice, Bahá'u'lláh, The Proclamation of Bahá'u'lláh, p. ix BCF, Page 13 1996-2009, HearttoHeartPublications.com, LLC
  • 14. The Dawn of a New Day This is the Day in which God's most excellent favors have been poured out upon men, the Day in which His most mighty grace hath been infused into all created things. It is incumbent upon all the peoples of the world to reconcile their differences, and, with perfect unity and peace, abide beneath the shadow of the Tree of His care and loving-kindness. • 15. How does Bahá‘u‘lláh describe the awakening of His revelation? When We entered the prison, on arrival, they conducted us along a dismal corridor, and thence We descended three steep stairs to the dungeon appointed for Us. The place was dark, and its inmates numbered nearly a hundred and fifty – thieves, assassins, and highway robbers. Holding such a crowd as this, it yet had no outlet but the passage through which We entered. The pen fails to describe this place and its putrid stench. Most of the company had neither clothes to wear nor mat to lie on. God knows what We endured in that gloomy and loathsome place! By day and by night, in this prison We reflected on the condition of the Bábís and their doings and affairs, wondering how, notwithstanding their greatness of soul, nobility, and intelligence, they could be capable of such a deed as this audacious attempt on the life of the sovereign. Then did this wronged One determine that, on leaving this prison, He would arise with the utmost endeavor for the regeneration of these souls. One night, in a dream, this all-glorious word was heard from all sides: ‚Verily We will aid Thee to triumph by Thyself and by Thy pen. Grieve not for that which hath befallen Thee, and have no fear. Truly Thou art of them that are secure. Ere long shall the Lord send forth and reveal the treasures of the earth, men who shall give Thee the victory by Thyself and by Thy name wherewith the Lord hath revived the hearts of them that know.‛ Bahá‘u‘lláh, quoted by Nabil-i A‘zam in Nabil's Narrative, translated and edited by Shoghi Effendi, The Dawn-Breakers, p. 609 BCF, Page 15 1996-2009, HearttoHeartPublications.com, LLC
  • 16. A short summary of the life of Bahá‘u‘lláh "The face of him on whom I gazed I can never forget, though I cannot describe it. Those piercing eyes seemed to read one's very soul; power and authority sat on that ample brow<. No need to ask in whose presence I stood, as I bowed myself before one who is the object of a devotion and love which kings might envy and emperors sigh for in vain!‚ Bah{’u’ll{h was thus described by the well-known Cambridge University Orientalist Edward Granville Browne in 1890. Bah{’u’ll{h had, at that time, been a prisoner and an exile for almost 40 years<; today He is recognized by millions of followers around the world as the Manifestation of God or Divine Teacher for this age<. Bah{’u’ll{h's central message for humanity in this day is one of unity and justice<. Born into a noble family in nineteenth century Persia, Bah{’u’ll{h's destiny would seem to have been one of wealth and ease. Yet, from an early age He showed little interest in following in His father's footsteps at the Shah's court, preferring to spend His time and resources in ministering to the poor. Later, His recognition of the religion of The Báb , which arose in 1844 in Persia and was destined to fulfill the prophecies of Islam, caused Him to be cast into prison and subsequently exiled<. Throughout the long years of exile He endured, Bah{’u’ll{h revealed divinely inspired passages equivalent to over 100 volumes. This revelation comprises mystical writings, social and ethical teachings, laws and ordinances, and a fearless proclamation of His message to the kings and rulers of the world, including Napoleon III, Queen Victoria, Pope Pius IX, the Shah of Persia, Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, and others<. • 17. Why did Bahá‘u‘lláh suffer for mankind? At last, in this greatest prison, His holy body was extremely weakened from the intense sufferings and His beautiful person became as weak as a web from this continual hardship. His main purpose in bearing this heavy burden and all these troubles which gave forth their waves like an ocean, accepting the chains and fetters and showing forth the great forbearance, was for the sake of harmony, concord and union among all the people of the world and for the establishment of the signs of the real unity among all nations, until the essential Unity (of God) might (at last) appear in the existing realities, and the light of the saying: "Thou seest no difference among the creatures of God" might shine forth upon the whole world. ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá, ―Star of the West‖, Vol. 7, No. 5: Bahá’í Scriptures, p. 361 BCF, Page 17 1996-2009, HearttoHeartPublications.com, LLC

He elucidated the teachings of His Father's Faith, amplified its doctrines, and delineated the central features of its administrative institutions. He was the unerring guide and architect of a rapidly expanding Bah{’í community<. http://info.bahai.org/abdulbaha-center-of-covenant.html Images above © Bahá'í International Community BCF, Page 48 1996-2009, HearttoHeartPublications.com, LLC

A tall strongly-built man holding himself straight as an arrow, with white turban and raiment, long black locks reaching almost to the shoulder, broad powerful forehead indicating a strong intellect combined with an unswerving will, eyes keen as a hawk's, and strongly-marked but pleasing features--such was my first impression of `Abbas Effendi, 'the master' as he par excellence is called<. One more eloquent of speech, more ready of argument, more apt of illustration, more intimately acquainted with the sacred books of the Jews, the Christians, and the Muhammadans, could, I should think, scarcely be found even amongst the eloquent, ready, and subtle race to which he belongs. These qualities, combined with a bearing at once majestic and genial, made me cease to wonder at the influence and esteem which he enjoyed even beyond the circle of his father's followers. About the greatness of this man and his power no one who had seen him could entertain a doubt. Edward G. Browne, A Traveller's Narrative BCF, Page 49 1996-2009, HearttoHeartPublications.com, LLC
  • 50. A day in the life of ‗Abdu‘l-Bahá These people are ranged against the walls or seated on the ground, apparently in an attitude of expectation; for what do they wait? Let us wait with them. We have not long to wait. A door opens and a man comes out. He is of middle stature, strongly built. He wears flowing light-colored robes. On his head is a light buff fez with a white cloth wound about it. He is perhaps sixty years of age. His long grey hair rests on his shoulders. His forehead is broad, full, and high, his nose slightly aquiline, his moustaches and beard, the latter full though not heavy, nearly white. His eyes are grey and blue, large, and both soft and penetrating. His bearing is simple, but there is grace, dignity, and even majesty about his movements. He passes through the crowd, and as he goes utters words of salutation. We do not understand them, but we see the benignity and the kindliness of his countenance. He stations himself at a narrow angle of the street and motions to the people to come towards him. They crowd up a little too insistently. He pushes them gently back and lets them pass him one by one. As they come they hold their hands extended. In each open palm he places some small coins. He knows them all. He caresses them with his hand on the face, on the shoulders, on the head. Some he stops and questions. An aged negro who hobbles up, he greets with some kindly inquiry; the old man's broad face breaks into a sunny smile, his white teeth glistening against his ebony skin as he replies. He stops a woman with a babe and fondly strokes the child. As they pass, some kiss his hand. To all he says, ‚Marhabbah, marhabbah‛ – Well done, well done! So they all pass him. The children have been crowding around him with extended hands, but to them he has not given. However, at the end, as he turns to go, he throws a handful of coppers over his shoulder, for which they scramble<. • 52. Who was the Guardian of the Bahá‘í Faith? ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in His Will and Testament appointed His grandson, Shoghi Effendi Rabbani, Guardian of the Bah{’í Faith and interpreter of its teachings. Shoghi Effendi served until his death in 1957. During these thirty-six years the Guardian translated many of the writings of Bah{’u’ll{h and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá into English, expounded their meanings, encouraged the establishment of local and national Bah{’í institutions, and guided a series of plans aimed at diffusing Bah{’í ideals throughout the world. In the Holy Land, the Guardian's enduring memorial is the magnificent setting he created for the World Center of the Bah{’í Faith. The completion of the Shrine of the Báb was his work as was the construction of the International Bah{’í Archives building. It was also Shoghi Effendi who designed and laid out the beautiful gardens at Bahji and on the slopes of Mount Carmel. http://info.bahai.org/guardianship.html BCF, Page 52 1996-2009, HearttoHeartPublications.com, LLC
  • 53. The Guardianship and the Universal House of Justice © Bahá'í International Community During the whole thirty-six years of his Guardianship Shoghi Effendi functioned without the Universal House of Justice. Now the Universal House of Justice must function without the Guardian, but the principle of inseparability remains. The Guardianship does not lose its significance nor position in the Order of Bah{’u’ll{h merely because there is no living Guardian. <these two institutions are, in Shoghi Effendi's words, "complementary in their aim and purpose. Their common, their fundamental object is to ensure the continuity of that divinely appointed authority which flows from the Source of our Faith, to safeguard the unity of its followers, and to maintain the integrity and flexibility of its teachings." In His Tablet of Carmel, Bah{’u’ll{h announces "Ere long will God sail His Ark upon thee, and will manifest the people of Bahá who have been mentioned in the Book of Names." With these words He has called into being the Universal House of Justice, the Supreme Institution of the Bah{’í Faith, with its Seat on Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel<. You are the bearers of the name of God in this Day. You have been chosen as the repositories of His mystery. It behoves each one of you to manifest the attributes of God, and to exemplify by your deeds and words the signs of His righteousness, His power and glory. The very members of your body must bear witness to the loftiness of your purpose, the integrity of your life, the reality of your faith, and the exalted character of your devotion<. O My Letters! Verily I say, immensely exalted is this Day above the days of the Apostles of old. Nay, immeasurable is the difference! You are the witnesses of the Dawn of the promised Day of God. You are the partakers of the mystic chalice of His Revelation. Gird up the loins of endeavor, and be mindful of the words of God as revealed in His Book: ‘Lo, the Lord thy God is come, and with Him is the company of His angels arrayed before Him!’ Purge your hearts of worldly desires, and let angelic virtues be your adorning.< The days when idle worship was deemed sufficient are ended. The time is come when naught but the purest motive, supported by deeds of stainless purity, can ascend to the throne of the Most High and be acceptable unto Him.
