Marcus Tullius Cicero (or just Cicero) was
an Italian statesman, politician, lawyer, and
philosopher who lived in and around Rome in
the last century BC. He developed a love for
learning early on and earned entry into the
Roman elite as a result of his knowledge and
intelligence. He began his career in the
military, but soon turned his attention to law,
becoming an important political figure in the
Roman Republic. Cicero eventually became a
member of the Roman senate and a leading
light, due to his education, political prowess,
and oratorical skills.

Cicero helped uncover a plot to launch a
dictatorship in Rome. The would-be dictators
were executed. However, this feat later
caused Cicero to be exiled and banned from
living within 500 miles of Italy. He stopped
practicing law and focused on philosophical
writings during his exile. He is most famed for
his dedication to the republican system of
government and his commitment to his
ideals, even in the face of adversity.
