Workplace drug testing laws require that some high hazard industries use employee (AOD) alcohol and
drug testing in the workplace in order to cut down on workplace injuries& fatalities.
High hazard industries are often stressful to employees, and some staff are unable to handle the
pressures of working in dangerous environments sometimes resorting to medicating those stressors and
some employees are more likely to engage in drug abuse or drinking.
High hazard industries are places where substance abuse can cause a great deal more harm than other
industries. For instance, if an employee under the influence is operating a piece of heavy machinery, their
reflexes are slowed so that they may not be able to avoid an accident. They may also injure themselves
and/or may cause may thousands of dollars of damage to property, not to mention the potential liability
for lawsuits.
