2. The Young Ignatius
When Ignatius was young, he did not show very much
faith in God. He gambled and was into pleasing the ladies.
3. Ignatius’s Injury
When he was in battle, Ignatius was hit by a cannonball.
While in the hospital recovering, he was very bored. He
asked for some books to read. He was given books about
the life of Christ and the Saints. He read the books and
wanted to be more like them and follow in their footsteps.
This began his conversion to a deeper understanding of
his faith.
4. What is
Faith contains both trust and belief
Faith is a loving trust, it contains periods of doubt, it is a
risk, and it is a lifelong challenge
Faith is of the mind and of the heart and is both
intellectual and emotional
5. St. Ignatius and Faith:
Trust and Belief, especially in God
Ignatius had both trust and belief when he gave up all he
had to follow Jesus
He was wealthy and had all that he needed to continue to
live a wealthy life, but instead he trusted that a Jesus would
benefit his life more than that wealth
He also showed a deep belief in Jesus when he went into a
cave, in solitude, in order to become closer to Jesus
6. Ignatius and the Four Characteristics of Biblical Faith
Step 1: A Loving Trust:
Ignatius showed a loving trust that God would help him to
live a better, more satisfying, life when he gave up all that he
had to follow him. The picture shows him giving up his
sword. He would later give away all of his fine clothes to a
poor man

Step 2: Periods of doubt:
When Ignatius was younger, he claimed to believe in God,
but he showed doubt in God because he would ignore him
and sin often (as stated earlier)
Step 3: Risk
When Ignatius converted towards Christianity, he took a
major risk that this would lead him toward a better life. At
the time, Ignatius was a respected military leader and was
living the good life. How could he know that God would help
him live a better life than this?
Ignatius also risked his life while living in the cave, praying to
God

Step 4: Life Long Challenge
Faith was a life long challenge for Ignatius because he devoted
his entire life to God. He had to give up things that would
distract him from the path to Christ
The cave at Manresa (pictured below) was only a part of his
challenges
9. Faith of the Mind and Heart
Faith of the Mind (Intellectual):
In his book, The Spiritual Exercises, Ignatius shows faith of
the mind because he would write down prayers and take
notes about God
Ignatius also took classes to help him grow even closer to
God by developing a deeper understanding of him
10. Faith of the Mind and Heart
Faith of the Heart (emotional):
Ignatius shows faith of the heart and God when he went to
the Cave at Manresa. At the cave, he showed that he really
wanted to fully understand Christ and his teachings by
isolating himself from the rest of the world, free of
temptations from society
