Identity is one of the cornerstones of application security. On windows domains, identity is managed through Active Directory (AD) Domain service on the Domain Controller (DC). Therefore, it should come as no surprise that advanced attackers are actively targeting the DC. Earlier this year, Dell Secureworks had shared a report on an advanced attack campaign utilizing a dedicated DC malware, named “Skeleton Key” Malware. The Skeleton Key malware modifies the DC behavior to accept authentications specifying a secret ”Skeleton key” (i.e. “master key”) password, thus enabling the attackers to login from any computer as any domain user without installing any additional malware while keeping the original users’ authentication behavior. On this talk, we will explore the unique interaction between such malware functionality and the Kerberos authentication protocol; We will put a special emphasis on its manifestation over the network traffic. Netflix accounts for more than a third of all traffic heading into American homes at peak hours. Making sure users are getting the best possible experience at all times is no simple feat and performance is at the core of this experience. In order to ensure performance and maintain development agility in a highly decentralized environment/(organization?), Netflix employs a multitude of strategies, such as production canary analysis, fully automated performance tests, simple zero-downtime deployments and rollbacks, auto-scaling clusters and a fault-tolerant stateless service architecture. We will present a set of use cases that demonstrate how and why different groups employ different strategies to achieve a common goal, great performance and stability, and detail how these strategies are incorporated into development, test and DevOps with minimal overhead.

Reactive applications are becoming a de-facto industry standard and, if employed correctly, toolkits like Lightbend Reactive Platform make the implementation easier than ever. But design of these systems might be challenging as it requires particular mindset shift to tackle problems we might not be used to. In this talk we’re going to discuss the most common things I’ve seen in the field that prevented applications to work as expected. I’d like to talk about typical pitfalls that might cause troubles, about trade-offs that might not be fully understood or important choices that might be overlooked including persistent actors pitfalls, tackling of network partitions, proper implementations of graceful shutdown or distributed transactions, trade-offs of micro-services or actors and more. This talk should be interesting for anyone who is thinking about, implementing, or have already deployed reactive application. My goal is to provide a comprehensive explanation of common problems to be sure they won’t be repeated by fellow developers. The talk is a little bit more focused on Lightbend platform but understanding of the concepts we are going to talk about should be beneficial for everyone interested in this field.

Akka Cluster is a powerful toolkit for building distributed applications. But as always, power comes with a price. Special care needs to be taken during bootstrapping, network partitions and gracefully stopping a cluster. In this talk, I'll introduce Akka Management and Akka Split Brain Resolver modules and show how they can help to manage an Akka Cluster in production. Join us when you want to know how a stateful application can handle rolling deployments without downtime and without losing in-flight requests and how it can safely recover from network partitions.

gRPC is a high performance, open-source universal RPC framework. A service definition can be simply created in Protocol Buffers. Libraries in a wide variety of languages are then automatically generating the interface objects based on the service definition. Also, gRPC is much faster as REST due to leveraging HTTP/2 and Protocol Buffers. This talk will first give an introduction into gRPC. Afterward, we will see gRPC in action by creating a Scala service and a Swift client in a live-coding session.

Akka Distributed Data is useful when building distributed systems that focus on high availability rather than strong consistency. The module uses Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) to replicate data across nodes without conflicts. This talk will give an introduction to distributed systems, data replication and how CRDTs are working. It will serve as a basis to explain Akka Distributed Data and typical uses cases in which it should be used.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
