The document discusses several topics related to government spending in the United States, including views on Obamacare, taxation, and welfare. It outlines the liberal and conservative perspectives on these issues. Liberals believe healthcare is a right and support Obamacare and welfare as a safety net. Conservatives prefer free market healthcare and argue both increase government overreach. The document also provides some statistics, such as the percentage of Americans who support or oppose Obamacare, tax rates for high-income earners, and numbers of people on welfare and unemployment insurance.
2. OBAMACARE
The Liberals - are in favor, believe that every American has the right for
affordable healthcare. They argue that the government has the power to
command purchase of health through a specified power or Commerce
Clause. "The minimum coverage provision [the mandate] is within
Congress' power to enact not only because it is a necessary component of a
broader scheme of interstate economic regulation” -Solicitor General
Donald B. Verrilli Jr of Business Insider"
The Conservatives - in favor free market health care, which simply means,
health care is bought and sold without any government involvement. The
citizens against Obamacare will argue that not only is this interpretation
new, but it gives the federal government unlimited power. "The individual
mandate rests on a claim of federal power that is both unprecedented and
unbounded: the power to compel individuals to engage in commerce in
order to more effectively regulate commerce” Paul Clement, a lawyer.
3. OBAMACARE FACTS
• $235 million has been spent on ads attacking
Obamacare since it passed in March 2010. Only $69
million has been spent on advertising supporting it
• 41 percent of Americans support the law and 52 percent
oppose it.
4. TAXATION
Conservatives- believe that the government should serve the people-not the other
way around. Private property means what belongs to you is yours; if the
government confiscates your property, that is an act of tyranny. Along with
Government spending, these rates should be cut, not raised. If the size of
government continues to grow, it will expand and intrude on our lives even more
than it does now.
Liberals- believe that the government is there solve problems: to reduce poverty,
protect civil rights, keep us safe from harm, and, ensure that all Americans have an
equal chance to succeed. The difference in income and lifestyle between the wealthiest
and the poorest in our society is a big issue to the liberals. They believe those who
benefit the most, should be forced to lend a hand to the less fortunate.
5. TAXATION FACTS
• The top 10% of earners, already pay 68% of the tax incomes
collected. Along with Government spending, these rates
should be cut, not raised.
• Today, the richest (1%) earn 24% of the income in the
U.S., and the top 20% own 85% of the wealth.
6. WELFARE
Liberals- welfare is a safety net which provides care for the poor and
supports long-term welfare. Welfare is necessary to bring fairness to the
American economic life and is seen as a device
for protecting the poor.
Conservatives- oppose long-term welfare and believe opportunities should
be provided to help the citizens become self-reliant. It is far more
compassionate and efficient to encourage people to become self-reliant,
than allowing them to remain dependent on the government for subsistence.
The best way to improve America’s standard of living is to let people
pursue their own goals, and reduce obstacles that stand in their way.
7. WELFARE FACTS
• 4,300,000 Americans are on Welfare
• 4.1 % of the U.S. population is on Welfare
• 5,600,000 Americans are on Unemployment Insurance
