Where it comes from
• 80% of the worlds illicit heroin comes from Afghanistan
• Mexico’s illicit heroin production has risen 6 times from 2007-2011 making
it second in the world.
How it is made
• Opium is extracted from a poppy plant pod and turned into morphine.
The morphine is then turned into heroin by a chemical reaction. It is then
mechanically or chemically refined.
7. Is it legal?
Heroin is illegal to posses, produce or sell without a license.
Under its medical names (diamorphine and diacetylmorphine) heroin is used
as a legal controlled, prescribed drug and is given to patents as a pain killer.
It is also prescribed to long term patients to help them stop their addictions
to the illicit, stronger heroin.
