The Conventions of a magazine
A typical magazine contains various elements
that stay consistent through the majority of
magazines, for example a
barcode, masthead, selling line, main
image, cover line etc.
Magazines are a good way in promoting different
products as they are very popular, for us, we are
focused on our film campaign. We want to make
as many people possible aware of our new
film, in order for it to become successful. Films
that are produced and distributed always have a
poster attached, however it is also very useful
and essential to gain some public attention
through other forms of media, such as a
magazine.
On the right is a popular film magazine, titled
‘Total FILM’ which includes reviews of films that
have been released as well as information about
new and upcoming films.
Our Target Magazine
For our exam we need to use a real media text in
order to create a successful magazine look a like, out
of three choices:
-Little White Lies
-EMPIRE
-Sight and Sound
After researching all three magazines I came to the
conclusion that ‘Empire’ best fitted the film we wish to
promote. Our genre is social realism, EMPIRE released
an issue on ‘Trainspotting’ another social realism
film, we could have also used ‘Sight and Sound’ for our
magazine template as it promotes films produced
within a British industry and independent films.
However, as ‘EMPIRE’ released an issue on
‘Trainspotting’ this was the magazine best suited for
our film campaign. Little White Lies tend to promote
horror/ thriller films, therefore we did not use this
magazine template.

normally be a popular
topic of the target
audience and another

This is essentially the features that
we want our magazine to include in
order to for fill the full effect of a
professional film magazine, we want
the magazine to highlight why
audiences should see our film, this is
a key part to our film campaign.
Special features

The main image is set
covering the majority of
the magazine, the head of
the actor is placed over the
masthead, covering parts
of it. The image is also cut
out and placed onto a
plain background
