Virtually all weight loss plans encourage you to drink water. But while drinking water is usually
healthier than drinking sodas or juices, does it actually stimulate weight loss? Or does it just
leave you with extra water weight?
Researchers in Germany actually found that drinking lots of water was associated with people
who burned calories faster. Although the study was done on a very small sample of people, they
hope it will encourage researchers to study the effect of drinking water on weight loss. Their
study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that men and
women who drank 17 ounces of water burned calories about 30% faster than the control group.

Drinking water before meals can also help fill you up – making you less hungry, so you eat the
portion that is right for you instead of overeating. A study done by researchers at Virginia Tech
found that the participants on a low-calorie diet who drank the equivalent of a small bottle of
water before their meals lost about 15 lbs whereas the participants who were drinking water – but
not as much and not before meals – only lost about 11 lbs. A year later, the group drinking water
lost an additional 1.5 lbs and the other group actually gained about 2 lbs![2]
This just might be the easiest weight loss tip you’ll ever need. After all, drinking water is
something you can easily incorporate into your day without too much difficulty – just stick a
one litre bottle of water on your desk and make sure to keep sipping throughout the day. And
while it may mean making more pit stops along the way, drinking water can also provide some
more immediate benefits as well, like clearer skin, more energy and more comfortable digestion.
Whatever your lifestyle, the studies continue to show that you have nothing to lose by drinking
more water. Except some extra pounds.
