1 Undergraduate Studies ePortfolio Lorie Bachelor of Psychology, 2010
Personal Statement Personal Statement My interest in the behavior of others dates back to my first psychology class in high school. I did not realize at that time I would later become involved with a drug addict who would test my conservative moral convictions and become the driving force of my return to school to achieve my bachelor degree in psychology with a focus on substance abuse treatment. During my first year of undergraduate studies I surpassed my own expectations by making the National Deans List and a few years later was nominated to receive a student diplomat post overseas; which unfortunately I was unable to accept. Both of these accomplishments just reinforced my belief I finally was on the right path to my future. During my undergraduate studies, I became exposed to many theories on human behavior in relation to substance abuse. This knowledge reinforced and intensified my desire to learn more about human behavior in order to help others who suffered the same substance abuse problems as my loved one. This desire to learn more about behaviors which lead to substance abuse and my personal need to help others also prompted me to become a member of many fine organizations; Join Together, SAMSHA, Citizens for Missouri Children, and Faces and Voices of Recovery. More importantly than what I learned in school, witnessing my loved one’s struggle with substance abuse and recovery illustrated to me how good people can make mistakes in life and given the opportunity can turn their life around and become positive contributors to society. Experiencing this conflict one on one with my loved one and experiencing first hand what I was taught in my psychology classes concerning human behaviors, helped enlighten me to the world of addiction and gave me new perspectives about life, relationships, and the world we live in. Within the discipline of psychology, I also developed a passionate interest in children’s psychological development and the risk factors involved. One reason for this interest may be purely selfish, due to the fact I have children of my own and as a concerned parent I am always focused on ways to ensure their health. Another reason I am drawn toward children’s psychological development is due to the fact I live in a small community and see first hand how risk factors play a role in their psychological development; especially with substance abuse. My academic plan after completion of my bachelor degree is to return to school to get my degree in criminal justice. A criminal justice program will allow me to become more knowledgeable about areas such as social problems and/or criminology, court procedures, fundamentals in search and seizure, and forensic science and criminalistics. I hope to use my knowledge of psychology and criminal justice to enter the professional field of probation and parole. Becoming a probation or parole officer will allow me to apply skills I have learned; such as person to person communications, research, support and counseling, and assessment. I hope to be able to use all these skills to help young offenders turn their lives around and become productive members of society. I feel very deeply that given the right opportunity, many people who are substance abusers can reform themselves and develop healthy patterns in their lives. To give someone the opportunity and the means to take their life back is my goal.

Reflection My academic tenure with Argosy University has been great. I love the format of online classes. I got to attend classes with some of the most intelligent students from all over the world. My classmates were very diverse and I loved learning about other cultural perspectives on the subjects we studied. I feel I learned as much from my classmates as I learned from my studies.
