COMBINE 2019, EU-STANDS4PM, Heidelberg, Germany 18 July 2019 FAIR: Findable Accessable Interoperable Reusable. The “FAIR Principles” for research data, software, computational workflows, scripts, or any other kind of Research Object one can think of, is now a mantra; a method; a meme; a myth; a mystery. FAIR is about supporting and tracking the flow and availability of data across research organisations and the portability and sustainability of processing methods to enable transparent and reproducible results. All this is within the context of a bottom up society of collaborating (or burdened?) scientists, a top down collective of compliance-focused funders and policy makers and an in-the-middle posse of e-infrastructure providers. Making the FAIR principles a reality is tricky. They are aspirations not standards. They are multi-dimensional and dependent on context such as the sensitivity and availability of the data and methods. We already see a jungle of projects, initiatives and programmes wrestling with the challenges. FAIR efforts have particularly focused on the “last mile” – “FAIRifying” destination community archive repositories and measuring their “compliance” to FAIR metrics (or less controversially “indicators”). But what about FAIR at the first mile, at source and how do we help Alice and Bob with their (secure) data management? If we tackle the FAIR first and last mile, what about the FAIR middle? What about FAIR beyond just data – like exchanging and reusing pipelines for precision medicine? Since 2008 the FAIRDOM collaboration [1] has worked on FAIR asset management and the development of a FAIR asset Commons for multi-partner researcher projects [2], initially in the Systems Biology field. Since 2016 we have been working with the BioCompute Object Partnership [3] on standardising computational records of HTS precision medicine pipelines. So, using our FAIRDOM and BioCompute Object binoculars let’s go on a FAIR safari! Let’s peruse the ecosystem, observe the different herds and reflect what where we are for FAIR personalised medicine. Keeping data re-usable in the European Values Study Evelyn Brislinger, Astrid Recker GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences Repeated cross-national surveys generate huge amounts of cross-linked data and metadata. To enable replication and to make this data re-usable in new research contexts, thorough and standardized documentation of data and project workflow is indispensable. However, in the social sciences, data and documentation often undergo a continuous process of correction, refinement, and further development. These processes need to be documented too, especially to allow data providers to build on these results and experiences in preparation of the next wave. In this paper, we use the European Values Study (EVS) 1981-2008 to illustrate the challenges to be met in the active curation of extensive amounts of data and documentation created, altered, and re-used across the survey life-cycle. Outlining how these challenges are met by the EVS, we will particularly discuss the following questions: Looking beyond the “standard” documentation of data and survey methods, what supporting contextual information should accompany data to ensure their effective “migration” and use across waves? Especially relevant in a project composed of 125 national surveys covering 49 countries and spanning almost 30 years is the question which preservation metadata is needed to achieve this objective and thus support the long-term accessibility of data and contextual information?

Slides from the presentation at IDAMO 2016, Rostock. May 2016. Most scientific discoveries rely on previous or other findings. A lack of transparency and openness led to what many consider the "reproducibility crisis" in systems biology and systems medicine. The crisis arose from missing standards and inappropriate support of standards in software tools. As a consequence, numerous results in low-and high-profile publications cannot be reproduced. In my presentation, I summarise key challenges of reproducibility in systems biology and systems medicine, and I demonstrate available solutions to the related problems.

As the volume and complexity of data from myriad Earth Observing platforms, both remote sensing and in-situ increases so does the demand for access to both data and information products from these data. The audience no longer is restricted to an investigator team with specialist science credentials. Non-specialist users from scientists from other disciplines, science-literate public, to teachers, to the general public and decision makers want access. What prevents them from this access to resources? It is the very complexity and specialist developed data formats, data set organizations and specialist terminology. What can be done in response? We must shift the burden from the user to the data provider. To achieve this our developed data infrastructures are likely to need greater degrees of internal code and data structure complexity to achieve (relatively) simpler end-user complexity. Evidence from numerous technical and consumer markets supports this scenario. We will cover the elements of modern data environments, what the new use cases are and how we can respond to them.

Ever more data- and compute-intensive science makes computing increasingly important for research. But for advanced computing infrastructure to benefit more than the scientific 1%, we need new delivery methods that slash access costs, new sustainability models beyond direct research funding, and new platform capabilities to accelerate the development of new, interoperable tools and services. The Globus team has been working towards these goals since 2010. We have developed software-as-a-service methods that move complex and time-consuming research IT tasks out of the lab and into the cloud, thus greatly reducing the expertise and resources required to use them. We have demonstrated a subscription-based funding model that engages research institutions in supporting service operations. And we are now also showing how the platform services that underpin Globus applications can accelerate the development and use of an integrated ecosystem of advanced science applications, such as NCAR’s Research Data Archive and OSG Connect, thus enabling access to powerful data and compute resources by many more people than is possible today. In this talk, I introduce Globus services and the underlying Globus platform. I present representative applications and discuss opportunities that this platform presents for both small science and large facilities.

The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.

It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine.
