Ko Hineamaru te tupuna
 Ko Taumarere te awa
  Ko Ngati Hine te iwi
Ngati Hine Pukepukerau
In 1887, tupuna Maihi Paraone Kawiti made several
proclamations, some of which were recorded in Te
Papatupu books.
We begin our presentation with a whakatauki Maihi
took from the Bible. We assume that he used this
particular whakatauki to caution his people in any
consultation with Governments...
Ki te noho kourua ko te rangatira ki te kai tahi,
ata whakaaroa marietia, nga mea i tou aroaro.
Nga Whakatauki 23.1.2

“If you sit down to eat with a Sovereign, consider well
what is before you”.
Proverbs 23.1.2
The following three proclamations illustrate Maihi’s
intention for how his Ngati Hine people would
conduct themselves rather than be governed by
others. The proclamations speak of our mana, our
tino rangatiratanga and our tikanga and how they
tie us to the lands of Ngati Hine...
“Ko to matou mana me to matou
rangatiratanga me a matou tikanga katoa,
koia ka herea nei o matou whenua i tenei ra
i te 9 o nga ra o Aperira, 1887”

“Our Authority, our sovereignty and all our customs we
hereby secure to our lands on this 9th day of April 1887”
Ko ta matou whakahaere tenei, ko ta enei uri o
Hineamaru e noho nei i raro o enei puke e rua, o
Motatau o Hikurangi, kua oti hoki te whakatauki,
tu te ao tu te po, kia rite hoki ki te korero o te
ture nui o Ingarangi

“This is how we intend to act, these descendants of
Hineamaru, who reside beneath these two hills of
Motatau and Hikurangi, of whom it is said, stands
both day and night, in concordance with that which is
said are the great laws of England”.
“Ko te tino tikanga kia kotahi tonu whakahaere a te Maori.
Kaua e rere ke atu i runga i te tikanga. Me titiro ki te
upoko, ko Hineamaru te pou hei herenga, hei pupuri hoki
i te tikanga a nga uri o Hineamaru mo te whenua
papatupu, apiti iho ko te whakakotahitanga a nga uri o
Hineamaru”

“The intention is that Maori conduct themselves with single purpose. That it
should not vary in practice. When you look to its head the figure that binds,
is Hineamaru. She is the repository of all customary practice, which the
descendants of Hineamaru might utilise in respect of these customary lands.
And thereby ingrain the unanimity of Hineamaru descendants”
TE ROHE WHENUA O NGATI HINE:
– Pertains mainly to the land blocks known as Motatau 1 to 5

TE POROWINI O NGATI HINE (THE PROVINCE OF NGATI HINE):
- Lands which Maihi Kawiti identified as places in which Ngati Hine shared
common interest with other Iwi and hapu
Te Porowini o Ngati Hine
I rohetia e Maihi i tenei takiwa hei
Rohe Tangata mo Ngati Hine i te
             tau 1878:

             “Hikurangi titiro ki Pouerua, Pouerua
             titiro ki Rakaumangamanga,
             Rakaumangamanga titiro ki Manaia,
             Manaia titiro ki Whatitiri, Whatitiri
titiro ki Tutamoe, Tutamoe titiro ki te
Tarai o Rahiri, Te Tarai o Rahiri titiro
ki Hikurangi ki nga Kiekie whawhanui
             a Uenuku.

‘This area was identified by Maihi
Kawiti as the ‘Te Porowini o Ngati
Hine’ or the ‘Province of Ngati
             Hine’.
TE RUNANGA O NGATI HINE
               • 1887 Maihi Kawiti established a
               Runanga to provide political and
               operational leadership for Ngati Hine

               • Today the descendants of Ngati Hine
               maintain that tradition

•In 1989 Ngati Hine registered the
Maihi Kawiti Runanga under the Maori Community
Development Act 1962 and created a
               Charitable Trust.
