Do properties possess a cavity?
With no cavity, the majority of properties were constructed prior to 1924. That is also referred to as
'solid wall construction'. With a cavity or air gap between the two layers of brickwork, most
properties were constructed from 1924 onwards. Lots of people believe that filling the cavity with an
insulating material will allow this to happen and that a cavity was added to prevent water from
passing to the inside in the outside. As they are more economical and faster to build, properties were
built with a cavity. If filling the cavity with insulation caused issues, building regulations (which
came into effect in 1982) wouldn't establish that all new properties are fitted with cavity wall
insulation. Additionally, if it did cause an important amount of issues, the Authorities and Utility
Businesses wouldn't be spending billions of pounds insulating properties that are elderly, as they've
done since the late 1990's.
