Withdrawn. Indicates that a student officially withdrew from the course and was passing at that time. This
grade carries no academic penalty and is not used in computing the grade point average.

WF Withdrawn Failing. Indicates that the student withdrew from the course and was failing at that time. A faculty
member also assigns this grade when the faculty member has withdrawn a student from a course for excessive

absences. Since LSS course work is not included in the GPA calculation, this grade does not affect the GPA;
however, it does affect Financial Aid calculations.
Any grade review must be initiated with the faculty member, division chair, or assistant dean within thirty days of the
end of the grading period in which the grade was reported.
Students with disabilities for which accommodations may be required must notify the instructor during the first week
of class if they wish to benefit from any accommodations. Arrangements for accommodations are made through the
Disabilities Officer in Student Personal Services.

Administrative Procedures and Attendance Policy:
A.

Completion of the drop/add process and the withdrawal process is the responsibility of the student.

B.

Attendance is mandatory for success. It is your responsibility to keep up with your total number of
absences. Any student who has excessive absences WILL be dropped from the course with a WF. To
determine excessive absences, the following criteria is used:
A 6 hour or 5 hour class meeting 5 days a week – no more than 5 class sessions
A 6 hour or 5 hour class meeting 4 days a week – no more than 4 class sessions
A 6 hour or 5 hour class meeting 2 days a week – no more than 2 class sessions

C.

Prompt arrival to class is important for your success in this course. Although tardies do not accumulate
into absences, they WILL affect the participation grade AND the overall grade in this class. For each tardy
2.5 points will be deducted from the participation grade; this could result in lowering the average by a letter
grade. Students who enter a classroom after role has been taken are responsible for informing the instructor
of their presence to ensure that they are marked tardy rather than absent.

D.

Students are expected to remain in class for the entire class period. Students are not allowed to leave the
room to talk or to text on cell phones. Students must be in class to receive the participation grade;
leaving early will mean 2.5 points will be deducted from the participation grade.

E.

NO MAKEUP EXAMS! The lowest quiz or test grade will be dropped, so if a quiz or test is missed,
that “0” is the one grade that will be dropped. Therefore, DO NOT miss any other quizzes or tests!
The ONLY exception to this rule is if the student is absent due to a court-mandated appearance or
Georgia Military College event. Prior notification must be given to the instructor and the student’s
name must be on the court document.

F.

Each student will be required to write at least five paragraphs during the quarter. At least three of them will
be written in class. Writing assignments must be turned in on the due date. If you have an emergency,
please let me know, please let me know IMMEDIATELY! Do not procrastinate in completing your
assignments. Ten points will be deducted from the grade each day that it is late.

G.

Plagiarism is passing off another person’s work or ideas as your own without proper acknowledgement.
Cheating is to practice fraud or trickery or to violate rules dishonestly on an examination. Plagiarism
includes purchased or borrowed papers. Anyone caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive a failing
grade for that assignment.

this course. I have also reviewed the Ethics requirements.

PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is stealing. Keep in mind that all writing submitted to me must be written by you for this class. Any time
you borrow an idea or passage from an outside source (newspaper, book, friend ) without giving that source credit,
you have plagiarized. A “0” on work containing plagiarized material is considered minimal punishment; referral to
the Honor Council will follow.

  • 3. absences. Since LSS course work is not included in the GPA calculation, this grade does not affect the GPA; however, it does affect Financial Aid calculations. Any grade review must be initiated with the faculty member, division chair, or assistant dean within thirty days of the end of the grading period in which the grade was reported. Students with disabilities for which accommodations may be required must notify the instructor during the first week of class if they wish to benefit from any accommodations. Arrangements for accommodations are made through the Disabilities Officer in Student Personal Services. Administrative Procedures and Attendance Policy: A. Completion of the drop/add process and the withdrawal process is the responsibility of the student. B. Attendance is mandatory for success. It is your responsibility to keep up with your total number of absences. Any student who has excessive absences WILL be dropped from the course with a WF. To determine excessive absences, the following criteria is used: A 6 hour or 5 hour class meeting 5 days a week – no more than 5 class sessions A 6 hour or 5 hour class meeting 4 days a week – no more than 4 class sessions A 6 hour or 5 hour class meeting 2 days a week – no more than 2 class sessions http://www.gmc.cc.ga.us/catalog/page.php?page_id=1725 http://www.gmc.cc.ga.us/catalog/page.php?page_id=1783 C. Prompt arrival to class is important for your success in this course. Although tardies do not accumulate into absences, they WILL affect the participation grade AND the overall grade in this class. For each tardy 2.5 points will be deducted from the participation grade; this could result in lowering the average by a letter grade. Students who enter a classroom after role has been taken are responsible for informing the instructor of their presence to ensure that they are marked tardy rather than absent. D. Students are expected to remain in class for the entire class period. Students are not allowed to leave the room to talk or to text on cell phones. Students must be in class to receive the participation grade; leaving early will mean 2.5 points will be deducted from the participation grade. E. NO MAKEUP EXAMS! The lowest quiz or test grade will be dropped, so if a quiz or test is missed, that “0” is the one grade that will be dropped. Therefore, DO NOT miss any other quizzes or tests! The ONLY exception to this rule is if the student is absent due to a court-mandated appearance or Georgia Military College event. Prior notification must be given to the instructor and the student’s name must be on the court document. F. Each student will be required to write at least five paragraphs during the quarter. At least three of them will be written in class. Writing assignments must be turned in on the due date. If you have an emergency, please let me know, please let me know IMMEDIATELY! Do not procrastinate in completing your assignments. Ten points will be deducted from the grade each day that it is late. G. Plagiarism is passing off another person’s work or ideas as your own without proper acknowledgement. Cheating is to practice fraud or trickery or to violate rules dishonestly on an examination. Plagiarism includes purchased or borrowed papers. Anyone caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive a failing grade for that assignment. ENG 097 Syllabus Page 3
