  2. 2. APHRA ‘Continuing professional development (CPD) helps health professionals to maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence’
  3. 3. CPD Minimum of 20hrs (or points) per year. Documentation must provide details including dates, a brief description and hrs/points spent in each activity. Participation in mandatory continuing education such as child safety and manual handling is counted towards CPD.

I learnt the emergency home procedure that is being taught to parents, common inhalants and preventers and the role of the respiratory liaison nurse in the hospital. 45min 5/7/10 C Diff- Infection Control In-Service Presenter ED- The Shed Presentation given on C Diff. Education given including what C Diff, a typical presentation, the treatments and PPE required. 2hr 45min 14/7/10 Infection Control Training Infection Control Department Training by the Infection Control Department to do the yearly Mandatory Competency for Infection Control Nursing Skills. 2hrs 17/7/10 Infection Control- Snakes and Ladders Quiz In-service- Presenter ED- The Shed Presentation given via game ‘Snakes and Ladders’, quiz questions related to infection control and practical examples such as trying to remove PPE with red paint on hands and body, and using the retractable syringes on oranges. 1hr 45min 29/7/10 Infection Control Training Education Centre Training for Hand Hygiene- Implementing the new auditing system based on the ‘5 Moments of Hand Hygiene’ 4hrs 30/7/10 Mandatory Competencies In-service- Presenter ED- The Shed Presentation given on Mandatory Competency for Infection Control Nursing Skills 45min 30/7/10 Seizures In-Service- Dr ED- The Shed Attended in-service on seizure- typical causes of seizures that are not caused by epilepsy. Case study on sudden cardiac death preceded by syncope episode and seizures caused by hypokalemia. I learnt that not all seizures are caused by epilepsy and I should do an ECG on all presentations of ALOC. 45min 31/7/10 Hand Hygiene Culture Interactive Discussion ED-The Shed This discussion was brought up due to the poor ongoing Hand Hygiene results for the ED. Strategies to improve statistics such as rewards for observing good hand hygiene practice and techniques were discussed. It was suggested a survey be put out to examine why HH was such a issue in the department. 45min 6/8/2010 Mandatory Competencies Infection Control In-service-Presenter ED- The Shed The mandatory competency on IC held previously was a hospital wide presentation which was not very relevant to the department and did not address our problems. I took photos of our staff in different scenarios and put funny IC/ED cartoons into the presentation. 2hrs 45min TOTAL: 12hrs 30min

The group was split and given different scenarios which often had obtrusive medication errors. This in-service made me aware of common medication errors such as, medications not being documented correctly and medications that may be written up which contradicts policy and procedure. 45min 10/8/2010 New hospital layout David Corkill- Educator The Shed This session we were shown the layout of the new Emergency Department, and problems such as bed block, unsafe workloads were discussed. 45 min

I contributed to the meeting by bringing up an issue…… 45min 2/10/09 Emergency Conference Conference- Gold Coast Convention Centre I attended the Emergency Nurses conference and attended sessions based on my interest- education and initiatives. Please see Appendix 2 for sessions I attended and reflection. 16hrs 2/10/09 Portfolios Journal Article This article highlighted the benefits of electronic portfolios over paper portfolios. This has lead me to investigate the possibility of storing my portfolio online. Dion, K. W., & Smolenski, M. (2008). Why you need an electronic professional portfolio. American Nurse Today, 3(9), 13-14. 1hr 2/10/09 Masters Assignment Auditing and Feedback Written Assessment This assignment looked at the use of Handrub for the 2009 year at Robina ED. It was discovered that handwashing is the preferred method of Hand Hygiene in the department, showing the need for further education as to the benefits of ABHR. 10hrs
