Speed is of the essence when delivering data via the mobile devices. The amount of time

Another trick “up our sleeve” is how we dither images. Dithering is the process of taking an
image that is perhaps 16.7 million colors and identifying the 42,000 or so unique colors in the
image. By creating a custom palette that contains the 42k or so colors we can reduce the file
size by up to 80%. A great many times the accompanying color palette is what takes the great
majority of the space and hence the bandwidth when delivering the image.
