These agonizing and stressful conditions are increasingly becoming common in the workplace,
and point to painful situation of being micromanaged. Knowing how to deal with a micro
manager is extremely important; failure to do so can jeopardize your professional growth, steal
your peace of mind and can even make going to work a nightmare.



The most unfortunate part about this scenario is that the manager doesn't realize that he is
micro managing. To make things worse, most conversations in this regard result in an argument
where the manager refuses to accept that this is his preferred leadership style.

Communicate
Given his behavior you may not be excited to talk to your boss, but cutting off communication
will not help either. Discussing your tasks openly and clearly will not only tell your boss that you
know how to do the work, but will also indicate to you his thought process. Managers don't
always micro manage to correct; sometimes it’s only to get things done ‘their way.’



Anticipate
Knowing when you will meet (or talk) to your boss will help you prepare in advance. Micro
managers thrive on the surprise factor when they can catch you unprepared and dominate. If
you know when and what he’s going to discuss, you can be on the top of your game. If you
demonstrate that you know what is to be done, micro managing will prove redundant.



Clarify and confirm
So he’s told you exactly what needs to be done and in the precise way that it’s to be done, great,
ensure that you repeat it to him to clarify any mis-communications. Some individuals send an
email with the highlights of the meeting to capture everything in writing. This helps because
once you know what he wants and you work accordingly, he will have little to micro manage.



Survey
Is micro managing your boss’s style of working or does he do that only to you? Survey the
workplace discreetly and you may discover that his behavior is unique to you. In such a case
analyze any existing gaps in yourself and if needed, have a feedback session with your boss
asking for areas of improvement. On the other hand, if micro management is your manager’s
general style, then use the tips mentioned above.



Accept
Like any relationship, a manager-employee liaison also needs some compromise. If you’ve tried
all you can and still cannot get your manager to change, then weigh the situation with the overall
advantages of the job. If the big picture is positive, accept the bad in light of the good.


Switching jobs is one option, but it is recommended that you first try these highly effective
techniques to manage the micromanager. You can always change jobs as a last resort, but
remember that you don't know how the new boss may turn out.
