Ask Questions On Your Job Interview
“Did I get the job?” “Were my answers correct?”
You must ask questions during your Job Interview but NOT like the ones above.
The Job Interview is a two way assessment of whether the opportunity is right for you. The
interviewer will ask you questions related to your education, prior work experience, career
ambitions and personality while you can get useful information about the company, work culture
and growth prospects.
In most cases your interviewer will be an employee of the organization you are applying to for
the job opening, and should be in a good position to answer relevant questions about the
company.
In some cases the preliminary rounds of screening known as filtering, candidatures are passed
through broad parameters to filter out those profiles that are an obvious misfit; these basic
stages are generally done solely with resumes, but may involve a call to the candidate. If you
get such a call, it may be from a hired third party vendor and not an employee of the company –
so if you do ask questions, they should be broad and related to the job description.

Questions for screening calls could include
How urgent is the requirement?
You want to know if the employer wants to fill the position in the short term or is open to the
option of looking for a couple of months; this will be important when you weigh your own options.
Does the job involve shift timings / travel?
If you have restrictions, you should be aware of the requirements.
What position / hierarchical position is the requirement for?
This is more for experienced professionals who would not want to go through the interview
process for a position that doesn’t do justice to their profile.
Generally towards the end of the interview session the interviewer asks the interviewee if they
have any questions and here you should ask questions based on the conversation you have just
had or on issues that you cannot get information otherwise.
For example, ask about why the position has opened, is it because of attrition or is it a new
position created for new responsibilities. Do not ask what the business of the company is as you
should have this information through your research and before the interview. You can also ask
about the work culture in the team you are going to be part of.
Here are a few sample questions
Why has the position opened?
If you are replacing someone you can ask about the specific responsibilities and get a clearer
picture of what to expect; if the position is newly created then you should ask about the
parameters of success and how your performance would be measured.
What is the size of the team?
This is for the specific team you will be working with and the answer should give you an idea
about team diversity and dynamics.
Can you plot my Career Graph in this position?
Relevant only if the interviewer is in a position to do so, but you can get a good idea of what to
expect in the future in terms of increased responsibility, promotions, and salary appraisal cycles.
What kind of a learning curve do you foresee for me?
Depending on your past experience, there may be some fine tuning needed and this question
helps you understand what kind of time you will be given to get your act together and start
performing.
3. Interview Questions, Answers and Tips! www.Jobxray.com
I have a notice period with my current employer…
If you have a long notice period (over 2 weeks) then you should bring this up; however, be
careful that you don’t make it sound that it will be along wait – a job interview is your place to
sell your skills; ALWAYS BE POSITIVE.
How will my performance be measured?
Always good to know what your manager is judging you on.
Is there any travel or shift timing involved?
If you have a preference state it; make sure to clearly state if you are flexible with options.
Are there any learning and skill enhancing programs offered by the company for me to grow in
my role and take on more responsibility?
This shows that you want to stay long term and become part of a growing family of employees.
Most employers like to know that they are hiring someone who sees a future and not someone
who is looking for a stop-gap arrangement.
