St. Francis of Assisi was born in 1182 in Assisi, Italy. After living a wealthy youth, he dedicated his life to God and lived in poverty, becoming known for his friendship with animals. He established the Franciscan order and its rule of life, living simply until his death at age 44 in 1226. The Prayer of St. Francis expresses his commitment to using his life to spread love, forgiveness, faith, hope and light to others rather than seeking those things for himself.
