We've all seen ads and infomercials for one abs machine or another. They usually look very
promising, all scientific, shiny and new. And the infomercials all have sexy looking guys and gals
all swearing by the machine they're promoting. But do abs machines really work? How can we, as
consumers, tell which are the good ones and which are useless?
There are several problems with abs machines, especially those you have to fit yourself into:
1. The resistance levels are usually not enough for fit people. If you're a beginner they may do for
a while but they won't be good after a while.
2. You may find that the ab machine isn't suited for your body. Especially if you're tall or short, you
might find many abs machine uncomfortable, even if they can be adjusted somewhat.
3. Some abs machine tend to break or wear with time. This may force you to buy a new machine
every year or so.
The main problem that I see with the way certain abs machines are promoted is that they are
portrayed as being able to make you burn belly fat. I highly doubt that this is the case simply
because you can't spot reduce fat from a specific body part with exercise. Our body sheds fat as a
single unit. Whether we do legs exercises or abs exercises, we lose fat according to our genetics
and nothing else.
However, some abs machine are excellent and do just what you need them to do, what they can
do really and that is to help you exercise your stomach muscles more intensively. That is what abs
workout equipment is actually good for and nothing else. It can help you strengthen and tone your
abdominal muscles but it can't help you to burn off fat.
The abs equipment I recommend are 2 items: the ab wheel and the stability ball. In my mind,
these are the best.
