SBRT, pediatric cases,
and bone-marrow–sparing WAPI as three scenarios in which
VMAT could have an especially positive impact. Spine and
lung SBRT cases treated at our institution had treatment
times that were reduced by 40–60% compared with alternative
IMRT or conformal plans. A retrospective pediatric pelvic
case could have been delivered in only 2.3 min with
VMAT (an 8.2-min reduction from IMRT), with a 24% reduction
in MU, no loss in plan quality, and no increase in
overall dose to the patient. A two-arc VMAT treatment was
also designed for a WAPI example to demonstrate the possibility
of performing marrow-sparing WAPI treatment with
VMAT.
