Private Label Personal Care Manufacturing: A Guide to Selecing a Lab!
1. Selecting the best lab to manufacture your products is a crucial part of the private label product
development process. It’s important that your contract manufacturer be a great partner who is
invested in helping maintain and grow your business long term. With so much riding on the decision,
it’s critical to take your time and make an informed selection. Below are questions to ask yourself and
the lab to help you narrow down your choice.
1. Be Clean & Clear! Does the lab meet the appropriate health and safety standards you desire? Do you
prefer a facility in the US? Is the lab FDA compliant? Depending on your product selection and desired
retail channels, these are details that can be absolutely critical to your success. Feel free to request
documentation, ask about audits, or set up an appointment and visit in person. If you don’t feel 100%
confident on the quality of the lab at this stage, it’s time to look elsewhere.
2. Get Technical! What is the lab’s process for storing, handling and testing raw materials? Do they
have an in-house micro lab? How are products tested for stability? Ask about the product’s shelf life
and performance over time. The best labs take pride in their work and are interested in creating the
highest quality product for you.
3. Seal of Approval! Does the lab meet the specific certifying standards, such as USDA Organic or NSF,
which you need for your desired product positioning? Claims and certifications increase consumer
confidence and may communicate your brand’s values but there are often associated fees so be sure to
factor this in when budgeting.
4. Details Matter! Do you want a custom formulation or are you interested in private labeling stock
formulations? What is the lab’s process for product creation / development? What are standard lead
times and payment options? Are samples complimentary? There can be steep fees for reverse
engineering with certain labs so it’s best to get clear on what exactly you can expect.
5. Packaging & Design! Does the lab provide packaging options or are you asked to source your own?
Does the price quoted to you include packaging? Custom bottles and outer packaging will impact the
total cost, and often timing, so be sure to factor that into your plan.
6. Dream Big! How large is the facility? If you land your dream account tomorrow and need to increase
your orders by a significant amount, can the lab handle the volume and scale with you? Be sure to ask
questions about capacity. How many production lines does the lab have? How many units they can
produce in a day?
6. Enjoy the Process! Product development is a unique process-- no two experiences are the same. Be
prepared, be ready to learn, be open-minded and have fun! Often the product you end up with is not
the one you first desired… so enjoy the journey!
