DETAILED ITINERARY PROGRAMME:

DAY 1: DOUALA

Arrival at the Douala International Airport, reception by Global bush Representative, transferred to
the hotel. Brief tour of the City of Douala which is the Capital of the Littoral Province and it is big and
busy, with about 2 million inhabitants. It is also where the major port of Cameroon is and all this
together makes it the economic center of Cameroon. leisure activities, dinner and night in the hotel.

DAY 02: DOUALA - KRIBI

Breakfast, departure for the beach in Kribi. The beach area is very nice with palm trees and soothing
waves, it will be a great place to relax and prepare for the trip. The beach will not be crowded and it is
perfect for beach walking. For those who enjoy this I recommend a walk south (maybe 3km) to the
Lobe Falls, it is not spectacular in height, but it does end up directly into the sea. It’s also nice to take a
bath in the sweet water and I admit you can be playing in the sand for some time, building dams,
canals… Kribi town centre is where you can find plenty of restaurants and people enjoying themselves
on night clubs. This town place is where Cameroonians are coming to relax and have fun. Dinner and
night in Hotel.

DAY 3: KRIBI - MUNDEMBA

After breakfast early morning, continue the tour by going up the coast and taking a boat from Idenao, a
small fishing village a bit further west from Limbe. The boat will transport you about 6 hours up the
river, into the jungle, to the town of Mundemba. Lunch in the boat, Pass along the shores villages as
well as dense vegetation. Upon arrival you will discover that Mundemba is a very small and sleepy
town with its main attraction the Korup National Park, Africa’s oldest remaining rain forest. It is
estimated to be as old as 60 million years (due to surviving the ice age). Dinner and night in Guest
house.

DAY 4 – 6: KORUP NATIONAL PARK

Breakfast, start the day by trekking into the jungle. Korup National Park is situated on the border to
Nigeria. The border together with the surrounding rivers has helped preserve the forest. The rivers are
wide and fast and the only way to get across is by using the very long bridges, an attraction by them
selves. The area is about 1’260 km² and contains the highest species and natural genetic richness
recorded so far in Africa. Since you will stay one night in the forest there is good chance of seeing
animals like monkeys and birds. There are other animals around like leopards, forest elephant and
buffalo, drill, antelope and so forth, but then you need to be quiet.
Accompanying you, are guides with at least seven (7) years of education and they can tell you many
interesting facts about the plants surrounding you, like the ancistrocladus korupensis, a creeper plant
which scientists hope cure forms of cancer and HIV. If very quiet and very lucky you will maybe get to
see the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla (only about 150-200 individuals remaining). In the

evening on day 6 you will come back to Mundemba and Boseme Café, staying one more night before
continuing north.

DAY 7: MUNDEMBA – KUMBA - BAMENDA

Breakfast, you will move north today and it is a full day of travel. Together with head driver you will
first go from Mundemba to Kumba. This is a dirt road about 60 km and you will make one stop visiting
a palm oil refinery. Palm oil is one of the most fundamental export products in Cameroon and you will
learn more of its taste and uses. Most dishes contain palm oil. In Kumba the means of transport
changes from car to bus and before leaving it is good to eat something (lunch). The roads up to
Bamenda, Capital of the Northwest Region, are tarred and sometimes of very high standards. They will
take you to the beautiful highlands. In the evening you will arrive to Bamenda and check-in to hotel,
dinner and night.

DAY 8: BAMENDA

Breakfast, full day in Bamenda, The tour guide will accompany you and give you ideas of what to do
and discover, but it is also a day when you will have time to rest if necessary. In the afternoon have a
taste of traditional food for lunch. The town is situated in a ‘pot’ at an altitude of about 1000m. The
scenery surrounding Bamenda is beautiful, steep mountain sides and waterfalls. About 300’000
inhabitants share the streets and buildings and they contribute giving the town a pulse. There are a lot
of entrepreneurs and the market outside the hotel can offer everything during weekdays. Bamenda is
also the heart of the English-speaking political opposition and if you visit a small restaurant or a bar
you are guaranteed discussions if wanted. Return to hotel, dinner and night.

DAY 9- 10: BAMENDA – WUM - NKAMBE

Breakfast, It is time to explore the highlands with its rolling hills, waterfalls and holy crater lakes. The
trip will follow the ‘ring road’ which circles the heart of the highland area. First stop will be the town of
Wum, but before reaching this community, you will visit Menchum Falls and also lake Ilum and Lake
Wum. Menchum Falls is a dramatic waterfall digging out the rock about an hours drive from Bamenda.
This will be the first stop and it lies just next to the road. According to the Bradt guide book one should
be aware of the safety railings, they could be dangerous. Dinner and night in Wum. From Wum you
will go to Nkambe and along the road you will visit the infamous Lake Nyos. This lake makes all
traditional beliefs about the crater lakes real and understandable. What are the beliefs? There are
many stories and legends and the best way of finding out is to ask people you meet and the Tour guide
will assist you. In short one can say the lakes are holy, magical, or possessed by witchcraft and not to
be disturbed. People say that “if you throw a stone into the lake, it will come right back up”. Locals
don’t swim or fish in the lakes. They do not fetch water to drink. To do any of this is dangerous, if not
deadly. They prefer to stay at a distance. Why is Lake Nyos infamous? In August 1986 the lake let loose
a big cloud of gas. This eruption was very powerful and the trees lining the shores were leveled. The
cloud got caught in the wind and passed the village of Su-bum where the suffocating carbon dioxide
killed some 1’800 people and countless animals. Scientists believe a bubble of gas was created at the
bottom of the lake. Since the Crater Lake is very deep, the pressure helped to create the size of the
cloud and after a while the water could no longer contain the amount of gas. This is one explanation.
Nkambe is as most small communities in the area quite unused to visits.

DAY 11 – 12: NKAMBE – BANSO - KUMBO

Except for the transport nothing along the road is planned for. The area will of course be beautiful.
Maybe today is a good day to make plenty spontaneous stops along the road? The locals will definitely
think you are the happening of the month (maybe of the year). In the afternoon you reach Banso,
outside Kumbo, where you will stay in pairs, for two nights with a local family, sharing their food and
hopefully help them with their daily shores. These days also include one social visit to the Shisong
general hospital orphanage; visit the Blind school in Kumbo, including a curtsey visit in the Banso
Fons palace. The second evening you will have a feast together with the villagers. Palm wine will of
course be offered.

DAY 13: KUMBO - BAMENDA

Breakfast, return back to Bamenda via the holy heart of Northwest Region, Mt Oku and Lake Oku.
Mount Oku is the second highest mountain in Cameroon reaching 3’011m. This region is part of Oku
Fondom, a place with rich history and great knowledge of traditional medicine and witchcraft. Mt Oku
is climbable, but it will take about seven hours going up and down and it is good to start early in the
morning. Maybe this is a good exercise before the ascent of Mt Cameroon? If everyone in the group
wants to do this, it will be on the groups own accord an expenses and you must follow the local rules.
First you must visit the Fon’s palace and ask for permission, together with a gift (Tour guide will know
the most appropriate). Second, you will be offered a guide and it is good to accept this. The guide
should get paid and the fee is between 5’000 and 10’000 CFA. Third, be respectful of the mountain.
This does not just mean to heed local customs, but also to remember the physical aspects. It will most
likely be hot. Don’t forget water and some kind of food. Dinner and night in Bamenda Town.

DAY 14: BAMENDA - BUEA

Breakfast, It is time to care for Mt Cameroon. From Bamenda you will go to Buea (870 m) on the
slopes of Mt Cameroon. This is from where almost all expeditions start and upon arrival, check into
hotel. Your guide will instruct you on what to bring and what to take into consideration. Eat well, rest
well and dream of trekking the mountain.

DAY 15 – 18: MOUNT CAMEROON.

Breakfast, during these days you will be trekking the slopes of Mt Cameroon, making an attempt to
reach the peak at 4’100 m (the sixth highest on the continent of Africa). Locally it is also called Mt
Fako or Mongo-mo-Ndemi, Mountain of Greatness. A big name, but the mountain rises directly from
the shore lines of the Gulf of Guinea and due to this it is a massive sight. It is not the famous
Kilimanjaro or Mt Kenya, but the trek will be physical as well as entertaining/interesting. During the
ascent you will start within the rain forest and pass different levels of vegetations, sub-alpine meadows
and black lava formations. The Vulcan is still active and there have been seven eruptions the last 100
years. Most recently in the spring 2000, but also in 1999 and in 1982 during the filming of Greystoke:
The Legend of Tarzan (which actual location is the coast of Gabon). The ascent is made during dry
season, but it can still rain, so bring dry clothes and rain cover, like a parka or rain jacket. During rain
season it is one of the wettest places on earth. Annually Mt Cameroon receives 10’000 mm of rain. The
slopes inhabit elephants, antelopes, primates and a lot of different birds. On day 18, after reaching the
summit you will go back down to Buea rest, dinner and night in hotel.

DAY 19 - 22: BUEA - LIMBE

Breakfast, drive to Limbe. Limbe is situated by the sea, at the foot of the mountain and between the
green hills it is very picturesque. During these days visit Bimbia in Limbe the site of an old slave
trading port where you can learn about the colonial times, where slaves were assembled for
exportation to Europe and America during the slave trading period. There are some historical
attractions still present in Bimbia today. They include; Old German Wharf where ships anchored for
the embarkation of slaves, chains used on slaves and abandoned Ship, the Alfred Saker Camp (where
Alfred Saker first landed in Cameroon, A monument has been constructed to commemorate his
arrival); the British Canon (an instrument used to abolish slave trade); foundation of the first printing
press built by Joseph Merrick (English missionary); Nichol Island (site that harbored slaves prior to
their journey to the new world) etc, the Botanical Garden, the Zoological Garden (a primate sanctuary)
and eat at one of the small local restaurants. The guide will take you to places with very good food. It is
also quite nice to take a stroll to the beach front. From here you can see the island of Bioko, were the
capital of Equatorial Guinea, Malabo, lies. Outside Limbe there are also beaches which are nice for
swimming. Ask for Mile 6 or Mile 11, but add ‘beach’. Quite many places are called something in
connection with ‘Mile’ in Cameroon, roundabouts, bus stations, general meeting places and such.

DAY 23 – 24: LIMBE - DOUALA

Breakfast, drive back to Douala. Back at the beginning and three weeks has passed, but it’s not finished
yet since there are things you can do. You will stay at La Procure Générale des Missions Catholiques; in
short, you just call it "Missions des Catholiques". This old mission is situated in the center of Douala,
in a neighborhood called Akwa. Take time to discover the surroundings, it is very exciting; On Sundays
there is always a game of football and this is something very serious and it could be due to the impact
of what the famous footballer Roger Milla had on African football in the world. He ‘helped’ lessen the
respect African players had towards ‘over-seas’ players. There is a premier league in Cameroon and
four of the teams are from Douala, hence the fact that there is always a game on Sundays. The game
starts at 15.00, bring something to drink (this is not an included activity).

Before going home many people like buying souvenirs and in Cameroon you can find really nice
artistic pieces. Masks, bags, bronze statuettes, games and all kinds of different interesting things will
be available, but do not forget to haggle. The place to go is Centre Artisanal de Douala. If you go, please
visit the shop owner Choclaude. His shop is situated before the entrance of the narrow ‘souvenir
corridors’. First, he is a very funny guy with lots on his mind; second, he has a lot of high quality bags,
cloths and similar items and it’s definitely worth spending time at his place. If you already have found
everything you need, have a rest at his place, invite him for a beer and enjoy his company. Dinner and
night in Douala

  • 2. DETAILED ITINERARY PROGRAMME: DAY 1: DOUALA Arrival at the Douala International Airport, reception by Global bush Representative, transferred to the hotel. Brief tour of the City of Douala which is the Capital of the Littoral Province and it is big and busy, with about 2 million inhabitants. It is also where the major port of Cameroon is and all this together makes it the economic center of Cameroon. leisure activities, dinner and night in the hotel. DAY 02: DOUALA - KRIBI Breakfast, departure for the beach in Kribi. The beach area is very nice with palm trees and soothing waves, it will be a great place to relax and prepare for the trip. The beach will not be crowded and it is perfect for beach walking. For those who enjoy this I recommend a walk south (maybe 3km) to the Lobe Falls, it is not spectacular in height, but it does end up directly into the sea. It’s also nice to take a bath in the sweet water and I admit you can be playing in the sand for some time, building dams, canals… Kribi town centre is where you can find plenty of restaurants and people enjoying themselves on night clubs. This town place is where Cameroonians are coming to relax and have fun. Dinner and night in Hotel. DAY 3: KRIBI - MUNDEMBA After breakfast early morning, continue the tour by going up the coast and taking a boat from Idenao, a small fishing village a bit further west from Limbe. The boat will transport you about 6 hours up the river, into the jungle, to the town of Mundemba. Lunch in the boat, Pass along the shores villages as well as dense vegetation. Upon arrival you will discover that Mundemba is a very small and sleepy town with its main attraction the Korup National Park, Africa’s oldest remaining rain forest. It is estimated to be as old as 60 million years (due to surviving the ice age). Dinner and night in Guest house. DAY 4 – 6: KORUP NATIONAL PARK Breakfast, start the day by trekking into the jungle. Korup National Park is situated on the border to Nigeria. The border together with the surrounding rivers has helped preserve the forest. The rivers are wide and fast and the only way to get across is by using the very long bridges, an attraction by them selves. The area is about 1’260 km² and contains the highest species and natural genetic richness recorded so far in Africa. Since you will stay one night in the forest there is good chance of seeing animals like monkeys and birds. There are other animals around like leopards, forest elephant and buffalo, drill, antelope and so forth, but then you need to be quiet. Accompanying you, are guides with at least seven (7) years of education and they can tell you many interesting facts about the plants surrounding you, like the ancistrocladus korupensis, a creeper plant which scientists hope cure forms of cancer and HIV. If very quiet and very lucky you will maybe get to see the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla (only about 150-200 individuals remaining). In the B sadi – bijou bloc 4 Douala – Cameroon. • 3. evening on day 6 you will come back to Mundemba and Boseme Café, staying one more night before continuing north. DAY 7: MUNDEMBA – KUMBA - BAMENDA Breakfast, you will move north today and it is a full day of travel. Together with head driver you will first go from Mundemba to Kumba. This is a dirt road about 60 km and you will make one stop visiting a palm oil refinery. Palm oil is one of the most fundamental export products in Cameroon and you will learn more of its taste and uses. Most dishes contain palm oil. In Kumba the means of transport changes from car to bus and before leaving it is good to eat something (lunch). The roads up to Bamenda, Capital of the Northwest Region, are tarred and sometimes of very high standards. They will take you to the beautiful highlands. In the evening you will arrive to Bamenda and check-in to hotel, dinner and night. DAY 8: BAMENDA Breakfast, full day in Bamenda, The tour guide will accompany you and give you ideas of what to do and discover, but it is also a day when you will have time to rest if necessary. In the afternoon have a taste of traditional food for lunch. The town is situated in a ‘pot’ at an altitude of about 1000m. The scenery surrounding Bamenda is beautiful, steep mountain sides and waterfalls. About 300’000 inhabitants share the streets and buildings and they contribute giving the town a pulse. There are a lot of entrepreneurs and the market outside the hotel can offer everything during weekdays. Bamenda is also the heart of the English-speaking political opposition and if you visit a small restaurant or a bar you are guaranteed discussions if wanted. Return to hotel, dinner and night. DAY 9- 10: BAMENDA – WUM - NKAMBE Breakfast, It is time to explore the highlands with its rolling hills, waterfalls and holy crater lakes. The trip will follow the ‘ring road’ which circles the heart of the highland area. First stop will be the town of Wum, but before reaching this community, you will visit Menchum Falls and also lake Ilum and Lake Wum. Menchum Falls is a dramatic waterfall digging out the rock about an hours drive from Bamenda. This will be the first stop and it lies just next to the road. According to the Bradt guide book one should be aware of the safety railings, they could be dangerous. Dinner and night in Wum. From Wum you will go to Nkambe and along the road you will visit the infamous Lake Nyos. This lake makes all traditional beliefs about the crater lakes real and understandable. What are the beliefs? There are many stories and legends and the best way of finding out is to ask people you meet and the Tour guide will assist you. In short one can say the lakes are holy, magical, or possessed by witchcraft and not to be disturbed. People say that “if you throw a stone into the lake, it will come right back up”. Locals don’t swim or fish in the lakes. They do not fetch water to drink. To do any of this is dangerous, if not deadly. They prefer to stay at a distance. Why is Lake Nyos infamous? In August 1986 the lake let loose a big cloud of gas. This eruption was very powerful and the trees lining the shores were leveled. The cloud got caught in the wind and passed the village of Su-bum where the suffocating carbon dioxide killed some 1’800 people and countless animals. Scientists believe a bubble of gas was created at the bottom of the lake. Since the Crater Lake is very deep, the pressure helped to create the size of the cloud and after a while the water could no longer contain the amount of gas. This is one explanation. Nkambe is as most small communities in the area quite unused to visits. B sadi – bijou bloc 4 Douala – Cameroon. Tel: (237) 33 47 70 00, Fax: (237) 33 15 67 05, Cell :( 237) 70 49 76 63 Global Bush Travel and Tourism Agency info@globalbushtratour.com skype: tourism66 www.globalbushtratour.com Pg. 3
  • 4. DAY 11 – 12: NKAMBE – BANSO - KUMBO Except for the transport nothing along the road is planned for. The area will of course be beautiful. Maybe today is a good day to make plenty spontaneous stops along the road? The locals will definitely think you are the happening of the month (maybe of the year). In the afternoon you reach Banso, outside Kumbo, where you will stay in pairs, for two nights with a local family, sharing their food and hopefully help them with their daily shores. These days also include one social visit to the Shisong general hospital orphanage; visit the Blind school in Kumbo, including a curtsey visit in the Banso Fons palace. The second evening you will have a feast together with the villagers. Palm wine will of course be offered. DAY 13: KUMBO - BAMENDA Breakfast, return back to Bamenda via the holy heart of Northwest Region, Mt Oku and Lake Oku. Mount Oku is the second highest mountain in Cameroon reaching 3’011m. This region is part of Oku Fondom, a place with rich history and great knowledge of traditional medicine and witchcraft. Mt Oku is climbable, but it will take about seven hours going up and down and it is good to start early in the morning. Maybe this is a good exercise before the ascent of Mt Cameroon? If everyone in the group wants to do this, it will be on the groups own accord an expenses and you must follow the local rules. First you must visit the Fon’s palace and ask for permission, together with a gift (Tour guide will know the most appropriate). Second, you will be offered a guide and it is good to accept this. The guide should get paid and the fee is between 5’000 and 10’000 CFA. Third, be respectful of the mountain. This does not just mean to heed local customs, but also to remember the physical aspects. It will most likely be hot. Don’t forget water and some kind of food. Dinner and night in Bamenda Town. DAY 14: BAMENDA - BUEA Breakfast, It is time to care for Mt Cameroon. From Bamenda you will go to Buea (870 m) on the slopes of Mt Cameroon. This is from where almost all expeditions start and upon arrival, check into hotel. Your guide will instruct you on what to bring and what to take into consideration. Eat well, rest well and dream of trekking the mountain. DAY 15 – 18: MOUNT CAMEROON. Breakfast, during these days you will be trekking the slopes of Mt Cameroon, making an attempt to reach the peak at 4’100 m (the sixth highest on the continent of Africa). Locally it is also called Mt Fako or Mongo-mo-Ndemi, Mountain of Greatness. A big name, but the mountain rises directly from the shore lines of the Gulf of Guinea and due to this it is a massive sight. It is not the famous Kilimanjaro or Mt Kenya, but the trek will be physical as well as entertaining/interesting. During the ascent you will start within the rain forest and pass different levels of vegetations, sub-alpine meadows and black lava formations. The Vulcan is still active and there have been seven eruptions the last 100 years. Most recently in the spring 2000, but also in 1999 and in 1982 during the filming of Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan (which actual location is the coast of Gabon). The ascent is made during dry season, but it can still rain, so bring dry clothes and rain cover, like a parka or rain jacket. During rain season it is one of the wettest places on earth. Annually Mt Cameroon receives 10’000 mm of rain. The slopes inhabit elephants, antelopes, primates and a lot of different birds. On day 18, after reaching the summit you will go back down to Buea rest, dinner and night in hotel. B sadi – bijou bloc 4 Douala – Cameroon. Tel: (237) 33 47 70 00, Fax: (237) 33 15 67 05, Cell :( 237) 70 49 76 63 Global Bush Travel and Tourism Agency info@globalbushtratour.com skype: tourism66 www.globalbushtratour.com Pg. 4
  • 5. DAY 19 - 22: BUEA - LIMBE Breakfast, drive to Limbe. Limbe is situated by the sea, at the foot of the mountain and between the green hills it is very picturesque. During these days visit Bimbia in Limbe the site of an old slave trading port where you can learn about the colonial times, where slaves were assembled for exportation to Europe and America during the slave trading period. There are some historical attractions still present in Bimbia today. They include; Old German Wharf where ships anchored for the embarkation of slaves, chains used on slaves and abandoned Ship, the Alfred Saker Camp (where Alfred Saker first landed in Cameroon, A monument has been constructed to commemorate his arrival); the British Canon (an instrument used to abolish slave trade); foundation of the first printing press built by Joseph Merrick (English missionary); Nichol Island (site that harbored slaves prior to their journey to the new world) etc, the Botanical Garden, the Zoological Garden (a primate sanctuary) and eat at one of the small local restaurants. The guide will take you to places with very good food. It is also quite nice to take a stroll to the beach front. From here you can see the island of Bioko, were the capital of Equatorial Guinea, Malabo, lies. Outside Limbe there are also beaches which are nice for swimming. Ask for Mile 6 or Mile 11, but add ‘beach’. Quite many places are called something in connection with ‘Mile’ in Cameroon, roundabouts, bus stations, general meeting places and such. DAY 23 – 24: LIMBE - DOUALA Breakfast, drive back to Douala. Back at the beginning and three weeks has passed, but it’s not finished yet since there are things you can do. You will stay at La Procure Générale des Missions Catholiques; in short, you just call it "Missions des Catholiques". This old mission is situated in the center of Douala, in a neighborhood called Akwa. Take time to discover the surroundings, it is very exciting; On Sundays there is always a game of football and this is something very serious and it could be due to the impact of what the famous footballer Roger Milla had on African football in the world. He ‘helped’ lessen the respect African players had towards ‘over-seas’ players. There is a premier league in Cameroon and four of the teams are from Douala, hence the fact that there is always a game on Sundays. The game starts at 15.00, bring something to drink (this is not an included activity). Before going home many people like buying souvenirs and in Cameroon you can find really nice artistic pieces. Masks, bags, bronze statuettes, games and all kinds of different interesting things will be available, but do not forget to haggle. The place to go is Centre Artisanal de Douala. If you go, please visit the shop owner Choclaude. His shop is situated before the entrance of the narrow ‘souvenir corridors’. First, he is a very funny guy with lots on his mind; second, he has a lot of high quality bags, cloths and similar items and it’s definitely worth spending time at his place. If you already have found everything you need, have a rest at his place, invite him for a beer and enjoy his company. Dinner and night in Douala B sadi – bijou bloc 4 Douala – Cameroon.
