2. Pets can be a big portion of our daily
lives and as much as we love them like
one of our own children, we can’t take
them everywhere. And for most
companies, bringing your pets to work
is not a common practice.
Over the years, things are starting to
change. More and more companies
have changed their policies to allow
pets into the workplace resulting in
increased productivity, less stress,
better employee relationships, and a
friendlier work environment.
Who let the dogs out?
3. A survey conducted in 2006 by the American Pet Products Association (APPA)
discovered that participants in companies that allow pets in the workplace stated
that their work environment is more creative, improved their productivity, and
helped employees relate to each other better. More and more companies are
allowing Fido into the workplace in an effort to boost employee morale,
productivity and engagement.
So what’s all the woof about bringing your pet to work and does it make good
business sense? Most companies that are already doing it (Amazon, Google, Ben
& Jerry’s, and even Congress) state that this practice is positive and does work.
No wonder there’s a day called, “Take Your Dog to Work Day,” created by Pet
Sitters International to celebrate the pets in the workplace. This day has been
embraced by pet lovers everywhere and has been celebrated since 1999.
Dogs At Work Is Not So Far-Fetched
4. Petting a cat or dog relaxes you and produces oxytocin, the
feel-good hormone that makes one happy. Even looking at
cute pictures of dogs and videos of grumpy cats can boost
attention to detail and overall performance – according to
this study from Japanese researcher Hiroshi Nittono.
People with pets are less likely to suffer from depression
and have a lower blood pressure in stressful situations than
those without pets. Pet parents that are worried about
leaving pets at home for long periods of time may have
relief knowing that their pets are with them.
To have these benefits, a pet doesn’t have to be a dog or a
cat. Even watching a fish swim around in its bowl of water
can help reduce muscle tension and lower your pulse rate.
How Cute Can Reduce Stress
5. Some businesses have adapted to having an “office dog”
to greet customers and clients, and many are delighted to
see them. Having a pet in your business provides an
icebreaker for conversations to clients and employees;
therefore, increasing collaboration between them. This
provides social interaction for employees and a needed
break from their daily tasks. When dealing with long tasks,
taking a brief moment to pet Fido gives you a mental break.
Research states that this brief break will actually help you
re-focus on the task at hand.
Allowing pets to roam and lay around the workplace results
in a lower level of absenteeism and creates a more
relaxed, friendly, and informal atmosphere. Employees and
customers may have a more positive impression about the
company with pets around.
Friendlier Atmosphere
6. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, a pet’s company can help people who
are living with depression. Studies have also found
that having a pet has the potential to also reduce
anxiety, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and the
feelings of loneliness. Research has shown that
animal interaction boosts health and general well-
being.
The presence of pets gives you the feeling of being
needed, which will encourage you to focus on health
and exercise. Because pets offer unlimited amounts
of affection and non-judgmental companionship,
they have the ability to make us feel less lonely and
counteract our isolation.
