2. The modern game began in Scotland in 1457.
Golf was officially documented as a sport with
rules in 1744.
Golf clubs were originally played with cut
branches from trees.
The golf club has been changed many times
throughout the years to fit a player’s
size, shape, sex, and age.
3. Woods were originally made with
wood, most popularly Persimmon
wood, which gives them their name
Over the years, the material of the shaft has
changed from wood to laminated wood to
(most recently) carbon fiber, titanium, and
scandium.
The heads are now generally made
from metal or composite materials.
4. In the 1980’s oversized club head were
introduced.
They increase distance, forgiveness, and
consistency.
Create larger “sweet spots”,
which allows the ball to travel
farther.
5. Irons were first made from flat pieced of
metal, and they resembled blades.
One design of irons was changed to
distribute the weight of the club more evenly
around the head.
Iron’s shafts are still normally made with
steel, but graphite shafts are becoming more
popular.
6. Newer type of club that combines aspects of
woods and irons
They play like irons, but have the forgiveness
of a wood.
Hybrid irons are becoming more
popular, which is the face of iron with a high
mass back, but hybrid woods (with faces of a
wood) are still in use as well.
7. Putters originally were made of
forged iron and shaped like irons.
The design changed to lower the
center of gravity. The clubhead
became long, flat, and thin.
In the last 20-30 years, the design of putters
themselves have changed to include many
variations.
