MY Year in Review 2013
1. MY year in review
@geoffworth
A year in review you
can read about
anywhere. MY year in
review is only here…
What I experienced for
the year, the lessons I
think I have learned,
what’s next…
2. January
Bubbles…
AT&T Developer Summit –
day before CES 2013. If
you can spot the 2 AT&T
execs then special
award…. The none exec
wrote a WebRTC app that
would not allow you to
make bad calls dependent
on your nasty
brainwaves…. He won.
Telecom is a 2.6 Trillion
dollar industry. Say hello
to the internet – all change!
3. February
Eco-system…
Mobile World Congress,
2013, Barcelona.
Working left to right
Bubble one. Hotel room.
No bar in hotel. Go to bar
next door
Bar has no kitchen.
Restaurant next door…
Lesson of a brilliant
ecosystem – you can do
but never do unless core to
what you are trying to
do…. – obvious!
5. April
Techonomy. Me and THE
Gordon Bell. Before going
on stage I asked him what
he thought of the panel
before. He simply said
“Bullshit!”. It was a great
http://techonomy.com/conf/13-lab/your-life-is-in-the-ioe/your-life-is-in-the-internet-of-everything/
conversation.
Lesson: Work with people
who have nothing to lose
since they normally lose
less than those who think
they do…
Nothing to lose…
6. May
http://allthingsd.com/tag/elon-musk/
So obvious…
Elon Musk at All Things D.
He founded SpaceX. He
said he looked at the
economics of building
rockets. 0.3% of total cost
is fuel. About 2% is actual
construction materials. He
concluded there must be
an easier way to put one
together…
Lesson: Is there an easier
way?
7. June
Trust…
When I was growing up
Snowdon was a mountain
in Wales
Our lives are dependent on
the integrity of data stored
online. And today we have
no way to prove that data
is true other than trusting
the people that hold it for
us.
Lesson: Change this!
8. July
The year of the start of
wearables that feel more
like disposables. Software
guys building hardware…
40% return rate for
Jawbone Ups. These
things are not cheap
Wearables or Disposables?
Lesson: Realize hardware
is different. If you do it, do
it well
9. August
Solve big problems…
Glow. Max Levchin, cofounder of paypal. Could
have done another internet
social media start up but
he wanted to solve
something big. How about
the fertility of mankind.
The way we treat infertility
is “mired in the 15th C”.
Lesson: Solve big
problems, WE NOW CAN!
10. September
10 years ago Nokia’s
market cap was $245B,
about the same as Apple
today
They sold to Microsoft for
less than Skype.
RIP Nokia 1982 - 2013
2 Lessons:
1) Avoid guys that look
like this
2) Take care of your
business irrespective of
size, before #1 does
11. October
Utilization…
Cars are not used on
average for 22 hours every
day
The only asset Uber has is
a networked mobile
application, and algorithms
to connect people with
close transport.
Lesson: Put mobile at the
core of your business,
think what assets you
really need
12. November
Society cannot keep up
with the rate of change. It
has always been true.
Legal…
Lesson: Legal change.
Understand it. It can be a
benefit and also a liability.
Look up red flag laws and
realize we are in the same
space…
13. December
Some things never change.
Integrity, belief, passion,
honesty, forgiveness,
humanity.
1918 - 2013
Be a part of the
good that has
always existed that
needs to always
exist more
14. 2014 Prediction
Thank you
Finally my prediction going
forward…
2014 will the year of
big people acting small
and small people
acting big and the only
important thing in all of
this is people
THANK YOU! And have a
great holiday season
