2. WITHOUT A DOUBT IT’S EXTREMELY OBVIOUS HOW MUCH TECHNOLOGY IS IMPACTING
THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY, AND IN A NEGATIVE WAY. EVERYWHERE YOU GO THERE’S A
SCREEN, BE IT A TV, COMPUTER OR PHONE. YOU CAN ACCESS CONTENT ON THESE AND
READ REVIEWS ETC. ONLINE. WHY WAIT FOR A MAGAZINE TO COME OUT TO READ A
REVIEW WHEN YOU CAN READ IT ONLINE STRAIGHT AWAY? THIS IS THE PROBLEM
.TECHNOLOGY IS ADVANCING SO RAPIDLY IT IS LITERALLY TAKING OVER EVERY HUMAN
BEINGS LIVES .WE CAN’T FUNCTION WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA IN OUR
EVERYDAY LIVES. MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS ARE UNFORTUNATELY BECOMING A
THING OF THE PAST DUE TO GROWTH IN TECHNOLOGY, BUT IS THIS A GOOD THING?
3. NME CASE STUDY
I AM GOING TO BE INVESTIGATING THE MUSIC MAGAZINE ‘NME’ TO EXPLORE
THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY. I HAVE CHOSEN
THIS MAGAZINE AS IT LINKS TO MY FINAL COURSEWORK PROJECT ON MUSIC
MAGAZINES AND I READ IT MYSELF AND HAVE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE
MAGAZINE.
4. FACTS & STATS
•NME AVERAGE WEEKLY CIRCULATION IN 2013= 20,011
(16.4% DECLINE FROM 2012)
•AN ONLINE VERSION OF NME, NME.COM, WAS LAUNCHED
IN 1996. IT IS NOW THE WORLD'S BIGGEST STANDALONE
MUSIC SITE, WITH OVER 7 MILLION USERS PER MONTH.
5. NME.COM
The websites
is easy to
navigate due
to the clear
and helpful
navigation bar
which attracts
it’s audience.
The news
feed is
regularly
updated
every day so
people can
see what is
happening
in the music
world on a
daily basis
and keep up
to date.
People tend to use the website as opposed to
buying the magazine as it’s interactive and they
can watch videos and listen to audio etc.
The website has a feature that allows you to have a
sneak preview of that weeks issue and read parts of
interviews and reviews in that issue. This is a way of
marketing for the company so people will want to read
the full contents, therefore will purchase the issue.
The website is
free to use and
can be
accessed
virtually
anyway, which
is one of the
main reasons
people use it
rather than
buying the
magazine itself.
6. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF THE
ACTUAL PRINTED MAGAZINE NME
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
• Physical copy
• Not interactive (can’t listen to music or watch
videos)
• Portable
• Have to pay for it
• Can keep it for as long as you want (memorabilia)
• Have to write or email letters of feedback to the
company
• Leisure activity
• Limited content
• Posters and freebies (CDS with NME occasionally)
• Possibly harder to access (may not be able to
purchase it everywhere)
7. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
NME.COM (WEBZINES)
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
• Can be accessed virtually anywhere at any time.
• Money loss for the company.
• Regularly updated news and info. Etc.
• People do not want to engage in reading small
print for too long online due to eye strain etc.
• Free to browse
• Less jobs available for workers of the company.
• Interactive (you can listen to music and watch
videos etc.)
• Possibly hurts the odds of the physical NME
getting recognition and consequently becoming
popular.
• Much more varied content available.
• Doesn’t sound professional and there could be
scepticism.
8. OVERALL I FEEL THAT TECHNOLOGY HAS LEFT A SCARING IMPACT ON THE MAGAZINE
INDUSTRY BOTH NEGATIVELY AND POSITIVELY. FIRSTLY I FEEL THAT THE FACT NEARLY
EVERY MAGAZINE CAN NOW BE READ ONLINE (WEBZINES) IS A GREAT TECHNOLOGICAL
ADVANCE AND AS WELL AS BENEFITTING THE COMPANIES OF MAGAZINES THAT
PREVIOUSLY HAS LOWER READERSHIP STATISTICS (NME), IT ADVERTISES AND MARKETS
THE MAGAZINES, THEREFORE HELPING TO ENCOURAGE READERSHIP OF THE PHYSICAL
PUBLICATION. HOWEVER, A NEGATIVE ELEMENT IS THAT EVENTUALLY I THINK THAT
PHYSICAL MAGAZINES WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE WHICH IS BAD FOR PEOPLE LIKE
ME WHO LIKE TO READ THE PHYSICAL COPY AS A LEISURE ACTIVITY AND TO KEEP IT AS
MEMORABILIA ETC.
