This document summarizes the contributions of two Australian scientists, Kim Kirsner and John Dunn, to the search for the wrecks of the German raider HSK Kormoran and the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney II, which sank each other in a battle off the coast of Western Australia in 1941. Using reports from Kormoran survivors and other historical sources, Kirsner and Dunn were able to identify the position of the Kormoran wreck to within 2.7 nautical miles in 2001. They defined appropriate search areas for both wrecks in 2005 based on a quantitative analysis of the available evidence.
