In Afghanistan, no need is more urgent than that of providing safe, effective maternal health services, and the Bayat Foundation has directed a significant portion of its efforts to that end. The group has collaborated with other international aid organizations, as well as with its network of donors, to construct a series of 10 maternity hospitals. These include a 20-bed facility in the Tora Bora district of the Nangarhar Province and a hospital in Maimana City, Faryab Province, that can care for 50 patients at a time. In a single recent year, close to 200,000 infants were born to mothers in these Bayat Foundation-assisted hospitals. Among the leading-edge services provided is the transmission of sonogram images from Afghanistan to the United States to enable quick diagnosis and treatment of potential problems.
