Health is wealth
1. • Manoj Kumar, our Regional Manager-Marketing at V-Guard, Delhi passed
away on 4.3.2012 due to a cardiac arrest. He was just 33; a
dynamic, hardworking and responsible youngster. He left behind his young
wife and two kids aged 5 years and 6 months respectively. We were
numbed by the news and are yet to recover.
• In the last couple of years, in our group, we had witnessed two more
deaths from cardiac arrests. We had barely recovered from the shock of
the death of Mr. Nishad N. M, Asst. Manager-Civil at V-Guard, aged just 34
years last year, when Mr.Shivakumar. G. R, aged 33 years, Sr. Executive-
Marketing at Wonderla, Bangalore had also lost his life to a heart attack.
Three youngsters in their 30’s, losing their lives to cardiac problems, in a
span of 2 years. Am I seeing a pattern here? At least a couple of them
were pure vegetarians and were not known to smoke or to indulge in
drinking. But, it is a fact that they all seemed to be obese. Surely, they
never expected themselves to be afflicted with heart attack at such an
early age. All smart, ambitious youngsters whose lives ended even before
it began. My heart goes out to their families.
2. • One could dismiss this as fate. But, I have always maintained that you
should attempt to ‘prevent’ rather than seek to ‘cure’. Over the years, the
average age of people inflicted with cardiac problems have come
down, drastically. Earlier, one used to encounter a cardiac problem only
after crossing the age of 50. It is now common even in the 30’s. A
sedentary life style is often to be blamed. One needs to maintain a body
weight in proportion to height. We also need to pay heed to doctors who
insist that the waist-hip ratio and body mass index should conform to the
prescribed levels. Regular exercise and periodic medical check ups are a
must. One needs to find the time rather than blame the lack of it. You
owe it to yourself and your family.
• I have seen an untimely death at close quarters. My own younger
brother succumbed to a heart attack at 52. At 61 and having weathered a
few more years, I consider it my duty to alert youngsters against this
danger. I’m even considering asking my managers to undergo a
compulsory ‘treadmill test’. You might think that you are safe since you
don’t smoke, eat non-vegetarian food or consume alchohol. But, even
then, this could happen to you. Take care.
