Plastic Surgeon Los Angeles on the Dangers of Mexican Plastic Surgery
Last year on the Tyra Show an intervention was staged with a woman named Tina. Tina planned to have
multiple plastic surgeries in Tijuana, Mexico. She planned on having liposuction on her chin, a full tummy
tuck with muscle repair, and liposuction in her abs, waist and back.
All of these surgical procedures sounded fine and fairly routine for an aging mother. That is, until Dr.
Calvert, an expert voice in plastic surgery Los Angeles, asked Tina how long she was planning on staying
in Mexico. Her answer was, “about a week.” Dr. Calvert then asked this woman if she had even met the
doctor that was set to operate on her. She said no and that she had talked to him on the phone several
times.
A good plastic surgeon requires a full set of medical records, a full lab workup and several types of x-rays
before performing procedures. Simple operations like liposuction require these tests and records. A full
tummy tuck is not a minor operation. It’s a major surgery.
Tina claimed that her doctor was board certified in Mexico and she found him on the internet. Dr.
Calvert determined that Tina was, “more hoping than knowing” what this man’s qualifications are.
All of the plastic surgery Los Angeles procedures that she planned on having in Mexico would cost her
significantly more in Beverly Hills. However, the costs include the hospital stay with a private nurse and
all her follow up care. He told Tina that he would require any of his patients who are getting a tummy
tuck to stay for at least two weeks. The reason for this is that Dr. Calvert checks his patients often to
make sure they are not developing any problems. A primary care doctor should not be expected to clean
up a plastic surgeon’s mess, especially when they have no idea what the surgeon did.
The woman went ahead and has surgery in Mexico against Dr. Calvert’s advice. Tina may have had a
great outcome, an average outcome or she may have had complications. If she had complications she is
on her own in a foreign country. There were no follow up shows about Tina to tell the public what her
outcomes were, but everyone hopes she is ok.
This story should serve as a warning to anyone thinking of having cosmetic surgery outside of US
boarders. The risks are too great. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Calvert please go to
