2. Sometimes you only know the
importance of your hair when you
start losing it. You ask what could
have gone wrong. Did it lack
conditioning or shampooing? But
you know it must be something
worse than that. So when you spot
the first signs of hair loss (i.e.,
thinning hair, receding hair line,
falling patches of hair), you need
to consult a physician to know
what could have caused it or
whether it is only temporary or
permanent.
There are many causes of hair loss and treatment is possible. Some of the
notable reasons for hair loss include genetics, dihydrotestosterone build-up,
hormonal imbalance, and medications.

3. Causes of Hair Loss
Genetics
If you have a strong family history of pattern baldness, chances are you could
experience it too even at a young age. This is a condition called Androgenetic
Alopecia which is suffered by 2 out of 5 men in their mid-twenties and 1 out
of 5 women in their mid-thirties.
Male Hormones
Whether it is due to hereditary factors, Androgenetic Alopecia has one main
cause – the presence of male hormones. Testosterone levels are mainly
responsible for killing your hair follicles. In men, it is the production of 5alpha reductase that causes male pattern baldness; while in women, it is the
rising levels of testosterone. When testosterone interacts with the enzyme 5alpha reductase, it creates a derivative called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
When DHT builds up around the hair follicles, hair loss happens. DHT blocks
the influx of nutrients to the hair follicles, causing follicles to shrink and
eventually die if left untreated.

4. Eighty-five percent of alopecia cases are DHT-triggered hair loss and treatment
for this is very common nowadays. Drugs such as Minoxidil and Finasteride are
just some of them. Other treatments include laser therapy, herbal treatments,
hair transplants, and hair systems.
Hormonal Imbalance
Pregnancy, contraception, and menopause are common conditions that trigger
hair loss.
Hair loss is very common four months after pregnancy and can run for a period
of two months. This is because thyroid glands start to function irregularly and
the system weakens significantly.
Menopause is another stage when women can experience hair loss. When
estrogen production slows down, the system may not be able to fight DHT
build-up the way it used to. Menopausal women usually take hormonal
replacement therapy which involves the prescription of estrogen/progesterone
medications.

5. Taking contraceptive pills, on the one hand, are said to cause hair loss in
women who don’t suffer from prior hormonal imbalance.

Medical treatments such as chemotherapy trigger hair loss called Anagen
Effluvium. These conditions are permanent however. Therefore, hair
replacement systems could be a good idea.
Stress and poor nutrition are other causes of hair loss and treatment
include hair replacement systems since they only trigger temporary hair
loss. Other treatments are laser therapy and hair transplantation.
