2. The original parade on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 was in New York City and was organized by the Knights of Labor. In 1884 another parade was held, and the Knights passed resolutions to make this an annual event. Peter J. McGuire, an American labor leader, and one of the leading figures of the American Federation of Labor, is the person who proposed the idea of Labor Day as a national holiday.
