2. Traveling to school.
Having a shower.
Watching tv and using a computer.
Switching on the lights.
Reducing the waste we produce in our
household.
3. Traveling to school.....
You can go on foot if you live close enough.
You can lift share, at least for part of the trip.
Use the school transport
Travel by public bus.
________________________________________
In Malta cycling from one place to is not popular due
to lack of safety on our roads(no continuous cycle
paths).
4. Having a shower......
We can warm the water through a solar heater rather
than use an electic of gas water heater.
Have a shower whenever possible instead of a bath.
Close the tap when you do not need water. Don’t just
let the water run.
5. Watching tv and using a computer.....
We limit the time these appliances are on and not
leave them running in the background.
Never leave monitors or tv sets on stand by as this
functions is still consuming energy.
Keep laptops, tablets and other mobile devices on
charge only for the time strictly required, since
plugging in unnecessarily leads to a waste of
electricity and also reduces the lifespan of
rechargeable batteries.
6. Reduce the rubbish we produce..
Consume products that have less packaging. These are
usually fresh local products.
Use re-usable boxes to carry your school bag instead of
plastic bags, plastic film, tin foil or greaseproof paper.
Using a mug for your coffee instead of styrofoam cups.
Although they need washing up, use reusable cuttlery
and crockery even if you are organizing a party.
Use paper on both sides before throwing it away.
7. Recycle as much of our waste as possible....
The 3 R’s
Reduce
Re-use
Recycle.
After we have tried our best to reduce the ammount of
waste we produce we have to see is some of the items
that are on their way to the bin can be re-used. A
simple example is the use or cereal boxes for craft in
class.
When there is nothing else we can do with our waste it
is time to recycle.
8. Recycling
What items can be recycled?
Most item around us could be recycled, however here
in Malta our National recycling system collects
Paper
Plaastic
Glass
Metal
We also have the possibility of having bulky items
collected by the local council. Items collected are
usually houseold appliances(fridges, cookers, tv’s etc)
and furniture items (chairs, tables, armchairs etc..)
9. Daily household recycling..
We can do our best both at home, at school and when
out and about to make sure that whanever there are
recycling bins available we place our trash in these
bins rather than using the mixed waste bins since if we
use the latter, all the items placed there will
automatically find their way to the landfill where they
will NOT be recycled.
10. Recycling
In recent years Wasteserv has set up Civic Amenity
Sites. Here we can dispose of
●Furniture, mattresses, carpets and clothing
● White goods such as fridges, cookers and microwaves
● Electronics such as computers, monitors, mobile
phones, printers, electronic toys and tools
● Garden waste
● Edible oil and lubricant oils
● Batteries, spent bulbs and neon tubes
● Expired medicines and used syringes
● Solvents, chemicals, paint and other hazardous waste
● Small quantities of household construction waste
such as stone and tiles
● Tyres
11. Recycling
In all there are currently five Civic Amenity sites
situated across Malta with works in progress to
set up a sixth one on our sister island Gozo.
The waste collected at these sites is either
exported overseas for treatment, treated locally,
re-used for other purposes or recycled. In fact
the purpose of these centres is to optimise the
collection of certain types of waste and increase
the recovery of secondary materials.
12. Recycling...
We will now do out part to make a craft activity by re-
using items which would otherwise be disposed of.
Toilet paper rolls and cereal boxes to make
something similar to this...
