Pakistan's population census was last conducted in 2017, moving the country from 6th to 5th most populous nation. Without updated population statistics, it is difficult for the government to formulate effective economic policies. Several groups have demanded an updated census, but the federal government postponed it with approval from provincial governments. The census results could show Pakistan surpassing Brazil in population, and various government agencies recognize the importance of understanding Pakistan's changing global demographic position for planning purposes. The government is working to fund a transparent new census of Pakistan's rapidly growing population.

Without latest statistics, it is difficult to formulate policies for sustainable economic
development. Business associations, students and some political parties have been
demanding for the much-delayed population survey, but federal government has
postponed the survey in consultation and approval of 4 provincial governments.
Planning Commission of Pakistan, Federal Board of Revenue and Board of
Investment are well aware of Pakistan’s emerging position in the world. Pakistan will
surpass Brazil after the survey, a constitutional requirement. Increasing population is
plus point of Pakistan. Government is mobilizing funds for transparent survey of
pullulating populace of Pakistan.
